gtl pinking

just spent the last hour reading all the old posts about this

ive not been able to stop mine from pinking on lower revs and on hills etc

ive set the timing in the middle of the timing marks and it runs fine otherwise, ive slowly retarded the timing a fraction about 4 times, until the pinking stops but it then runs not so well and had a loss of power, possibly a worn dist?,although its a low mileage engine,or something im missing>?

i know the advance is with bob weights and a vacuum, not really sure why there is 2 types of advance , im guessing for different engine speeds?

is there any way of altering the advance, increasing the pinhole size in the vacuum pipe or partially blocking it , or do you think its more likely the bob weight springs are slightly weak?
lots of the old posts say the GTL is prone to this

I've had a distributor in the past that I couldn't stop from pinking. I think it had weak springs, and I half recall the centrifugal advance operating at idle speeds which made the timing tricky to set. Swapped it for another and all was well.

Are you setting the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected, and does the vacuum advance work? The GTL can be very slow if the vacuum advance doesn't work.

hi there
yes disconnected the vacuum and blocked off the pipe, the vacuum works and the base plate moves when you suck on the pipe

ido you know if the springs can be replaced from something else or if they are available as a spare part

today i moved the air intake black plastic pipe from hole off the exhaust and put it in the circular bracket on the inner wing, seems to help a little as the intake air is colder i suppose
still pinking though !
