Hi all. Is there anyone out there who has hammock type seats in their R4. I would like to have a chat about repair restore issues, and how comfortable and user friendly they are. Whether its worth restoring them or should I replace them. Thanks.

They are comfy. Is this an early car or one of the special models that had them like the Safari? Either way worth keeping.

Hi Piet and thanks for your email. My car is a 4l from 1972, 783cc engine, no opening back windows, back bench does not fold, But it does have a heater. A basic car, I think called a 'commercial' model. Most of the seat cover is there in a grey 'corduroy' type fabric which is very nice. Has a couple of Gitannes holes, but otherwise good. Its the under webbing that has failed. The rubber panels that are stitched into the fabric support structure have de natured and are cracked or split, and have given way so dont support and I cant sit in the car properly. I have found some lounger replacement fabric panels complete with eyelets down the sides, which I am hoping to use as a springy support and then maybe just have the fabric seating on top of them. If you have any suggestions re the seating repair I would love to hear. No one has responded to my post so I dont think any one here has the hammock type seat any more, they being replaced by the later upholstery.

Hi Edwin- my thoughts- The best way would be to get someone to stitch in new rubber. An auto upholsterer ought to be able to do it. Alternately as a student I repaired the seats in the R4 I had then with soft rubber webbing wrapped around the frames from side to side under the covers to take the load. The way you propose sounds fine. You can experiment with some way to have some give in it but not too much, like running bungee cords through the eyelets perhaps.

Tried to reproduce the Jogging seats some years ago and found somewhere here stretchy rubber sheet, so I cut strips and had an upholsterer stitch it to the rest of the seat. I'm not sure if I still have this material, or if it's available at the shop where I bought it, but I'll have a look.
