HANDBRAKE CABLE - ORDERING THE CORRECT ONE!

Hello - has anyone experience of ordering handbrake cables? My 1981 LHD GTL needs a main cable from the bulkhead/(under the steering wheel) mounted handbrake. There is ajustment available for the 2 cables that run to each rear wheel and then to the mounting bracket underneath the car. But the main cable has had a knot tied in it -to shorten it's length - and gone through 2 MOTs!!! A solderless nipple would be great in this situation - but I guess that's not on?
The part that Franzose list - that i think is correct - is PART No:84109. 740mm (the covered part of the cable?) 2470mm ( total cable length?) Their pictures: 1> correspond to the nipple ok. Not sure what the other picture corresponds to! The year they give is 83>. Their terminology is a little vague: Does "FRONT: mean, front mounted handbrake, or front applied handbrake ( is there such a thing?) As opposed to middle of the seats mounted handbrake and therefore BACK?
Anyway I have measured the cable on the car - in situ ( as best as I can) and the 740mm measurement seems right. The 2470mm measurement seems a little long.
Franzose say take the cable off and measure; but as i use the car everyday and would have to wait for the cable to be delivered..... etc, etc,.!
Any ideas would be most welcome
Bye for now
Andy

You've got front drums on your car which is not commn for gtl only used up till 82 when dash changed and floor hand brake but some earlier cars 79 gtl had front hand brake so plenty of confusion possible

Hi Paul - thanks. getting there slowly; trying to combine a few parts from suppliers to save on postage, and weeding out what seems like the same component/number with length differences of 120mm - which as we all know makes all the difference. I think i'll go and lie down now.....

Found 2 of these today check numbers against the parts manual tomcat has got available as pdf file
Both 1 metre first section 1.4 inner bit after that aprox 20150911_182328.jpg20150911_140652.jpg
Will send if you want

thanks for that Paul; i think during a stroll round the ancestral home - that i might have sorted this out. Now all i have to do is figure out how to make the bonnet catch fulfill it's function - not arf!
Thanks for the offer chum

What I would do if you are in Portugal is to go to your nearest car part stockist and ask if he has a cable to fit your car. R4's were manufactured in Spain, and as a result there are still many genuine Renault parts available, at prices on a par with Der Franzose or Melun Retro Passion, but without the postage. Plus they are usually delivered to the store within 24 hrs. I ordered the wrong clutch cable from Melun, after paying 25 euros in postage. So when I was in Sapin, I went to my local autospare's shop, and I had the correct cable delivered within 24 hrs and am certain for less than I would have paid in France, plus no additional postage cost. They will pull out a catalogue, hopefully, with the part illustrated. Worth a try.

I,m thinking along those lines myself; just prevaricating a bit - as i want some hard to get stuff, as well as handbrake cable too. It was bit easier here, until the old fellow across the road who used to fix the car has retired, and is glad to see the back of the motor trade - by the look of it. But there's only so much of parking your old quatrelle on the flat because the handbrake is at it's limit that you feel like putting up with! So allez vite Jobbins!

It's worth sending an email to der Franzose directly, their staff know the catalogue well and should be able to identify the right cable. And if the correct part number for you happens to be 84113 or 84114, then I'll beat their price!
(I ordered a pair of these cables without following my own advice, and predictably got myself the wrong ones).
