Hi all.

Got just short of the pyrinees in the middle of knowhere and the clutch pedal went to the floor.

Limped back to campsite in 2nd and investigated.

Clutch cable freyed and stretched perhaps.

Problem:

Getting old one off:

I took the bolts off the rod end of the cable close to the gearbox.

I slipped it out of the holding bracket

NOW it got tricky.

I depressed the clutch pedal by hand (as per Haynes)

Expected to see the other end of the cable.

The top of the pedal doesnt come out far enough to see the bracket and the end of the cable.

I had to stick my fingers inside the hole at the top of the clutch pedal, almost cutting them off, and managed to feel the wire and where it went into the top of the pedal and just got the end of the cable free from the pedal.

OK so now its free.

I tried to pull it back through the bulkhead from inside the engine bay but it doesnt come through the hole.? the little block at the end of the cable, that I freed from the clutch pedal, Is too big to fit through the hole.

I tried to undo/unscrew/pull off the soft metal bit out from the metal bulkhead

I couldnt get it out without ripping/forcing it off. I dont want to do something I shouldnt so I stopped.

So how do I get the old cable out without cutting it?

Should that metal bit come out from the bulkhead?

If so how?

More to the point how onearth am I going to get the new cable back in?

PHOTOS:

1. End of the rod-end freed from bracket I have taken the nuts off.

2. Cable lying left to right see end going into bulkhead on right.

3. Problem: you see I have tried tentively to get the metal housing out but cant.

4. The clutch pedal in normal position

5. The clutch pedal fully depressed. See, I cant see the end of the cable to remove or replace, (although I have managed to remove it somehow)

Cheers

As I recall the collar in your third picture that goes into the bulkhead is a push-fit, and part of the cable, so with persuasion it will come out.

Changing the clutch cable is hideously fiddly, inaccessible and generally why you love your R4.

Watch out not to lose the cross-pin visible on the first photo, it does not come with the new cable, and is hard to find!

The yoke that connects the cable to the pedal is a separate piece and needs to be removed too. It has a slot and can be removed by pushing it 5-10mm forward ot free from the cable end barrel, then lifting it up (or down-depending of where the slot is) so that it goes over the cable through the slot. As you have the gearbox end of the cable free, you can pull the inner cable towards the inside of the car to see the yoke and you will immediately understand.
