head gasket 1108 motor

The difference in thickness might be to achieve different compression-ratios for the two types of 1108 engine (F6 and GTL).
The thicker gasket resulting in a lower compression ratio.

yes a good point, would be a cheap way to obtain this. thought it might have been to achieve possible slight head distortion. thanks

The thicker gasket is used when the head needs to be skimmed more than the maximum allowed amount (0,5mm), and so the compression ratio remains within the specified limits. This was (and still is) a common practice with many gasket manufacturers.

To raise the compression ratio from 8,0 (F6) to 9,5 (GTL) Renault used a different head (in fact a skimmed down by about 2mm one). You cannot go up that much with only 0,5mm less gasket thickness.
