My headlamps both seem to point too low, but the little adjusting levers don't do much to help. Is there any other means of adjustment, short of bending the bonnet itself?

Put Lucas 80/100W bulbs in the other day and it's a big improvement over the standard ones!

The people you meet on the road will surely thank you...
;)

The adjusting levers are designed to lower headlamps when carrying load the actual setting needs to be done with adjusting screws

There are two screws near the perimeter of each lamp. These control the horizontal and vertical alignment. (I did this when I replaced by headlamps, but I can't remember where the information about which screw is which - have you tried Haynes?)

The beams should be adjusted by the 2 screws as explained above. Firstly, the levers which move the beams when carrying a heavy load should be set to the "high" position and the tyre pressures should be checked and corrected, if necessary. The adjusting screws rust easily and judicial use of WD40 may help here...

A half-way decent garage will help you set the light beams for a nominal amount! Fitting brighter bulbs is NOT the answer, particularly if the beams are not correcttly adjusted! Oh, and it's also illegal to have incorrectly adjusted beams....
