Hello All,

I'm Mike, originally from Lancs, but now stuck down in Reading. I've always liked French motors, having had every model of Citroen Xantia ever made, 6 2CVs, some XMs, and a long term relationship with a 4 back in my college days. Over the last 18 years I've had 120-odd cars, just as a hobby, but none quite like the one I have now.

It's a thing called a DRK. It's a Morgan-esque 3 wheeler special - one wheel at the back, based on an R4. It was originally built on a 1978 model with drum brakes on the front. It's since been upgraded to an 1108 cc engine that's had head and cam work, and been lightened and balanced down below and had new liners, big ends and mains fitted. It goes well and sounds great.

I'd like to find out when the engine in it was built by Renault. I need some oil filters for it. The engine number is 688D7/12, and underneath that it says 000193832. Can anyone tell me what year this is from? I did an oil change anyway, but I'm not convinced the filter is correct. It fits and doesn't leak, the thread was the same as the on that came off (an old TJ FB3000) but I'd like to be sure as it's tuned and I like to use it. Might be confused by the fact it has an oil cooler fitted too.

Being a 1978 car, it also has front drum brakes. How easy is it to change these to later disc brakes?

My dad bought the car back in 2006 in Preston for his 60th. My dad lives in Greece. We drove it out non-stop, 19 hours Calais to Ancona, boat to Patras, then drive to Athens. Sadly he had to give up driving in 2009, so the car has sat unused until he shipped it back for my 40th birthday present..

I love it, and would like to treat it well. So, I need to know what filters to use, when the engine was built, and what oil to stick in it. If anyone can tell me also what coolant mix to use in it, that would also be fantastic!

Looks like a great forum with some interesting tech advice! Pic of my beast attached, as is a link to my Facebook album for that interested in more than one pic..

all the best

Hello and Welcome! Your car looks great. I've always used 15W40 in our 1108cc GTL. There were different types of oil filter fitted (see http://quatrelle.wikia.com/wiki/Oil_change) but from my own experience of getting the wrong thread type, you'll know if it's not right. As yours isn't leaking, I suspect that you're OK.

Your engine identification plate doesn't quite conform to what I would have expected for a GTL, which is of the form:

688 X 7 / 00
Y 000000

where in this example '688' is the engine type, 'X' is the engine type approval letter, '7' is the Renault identity, '00' is the engine suffix, 'Y' is the factory code and 000000 is the engine number (see http://quatrelle.wikia.com/wiki/Engine).

But I'm sure someone on here can help with the year.

Hello:-) Thanks for the info regarding filters. I guess as the filter that I put on is not leaking, then it should be ok. That'll do for me. As the engine hasn't had fresh oil for many years, I'm going to change it again in a couple of weeks.

Here's a pic of the identification plate on the engine. Does that help decipher what year it might be?idp.jpg

Hi, I've not seen that part between the block and filter before. Sorry I can't help with identifying the year, but someone else might know.

That part is just the take-off for the front-mounted oil cooler.

Welcome to the forum.

Standard Renault purflux oil filter is what I normally use, I buy them in bulk as the same filter fits 90% of the cars I own!

The filter fits Lagunas, Fives, Fours, Volvo 480's. etc etc.

Great looking car, I have a set of those wheels sitting waiting to be restored.

As for changing the brakes I wouldn't bother I have drums on my heavier full bodied 4l, they work brilliantly and the disc set up isn't a huge improvement and has a very heavy pedal!

As an aside, how do you find the oil extractor? Does it work well?
