Hi, my name is Roger and i'm a Citroen enthusiast. Well that gets that out of the way!

So what am i doing on the Renault 4 forum? Recently i met a gentleman who owns a Traction Avant so i called over to his home one evening for a chat. As i was looking around his shed, there in the corner, covered in dust, was a red GTL from, i think, 1985! He told me the history, how it had been in the family from new, used by everybody but been taken off the road and not used for years, just stored in the shed and worked around. He has now bought a 2CV so the space is needed and, despite me needing another car like a fish needs a bicycle, i'm getting a little interested!

After reading through the forum i got myself signed up in order to pick the brains of the knowledgable about this little car. I previously owned two 4s but that was about twenty years ago and only one was a runner; my experience these days is with a 2CV and Dyane.

I looked at the 4 today but didn't go poking about underneath, so this is only a quick 'surface' evaluation. The majority of the bodywork seems pretty straight and quite rust-free except the two front wings; the nearside is rusty along the top but the offside is holed through, including the top of the inner wing. The interior is complete and in good condition. Mileage is 50,000 and it has been off the road since 2001.

I know it will need the front wings attended to, a brake overhaul, fluids and service items changed and a set of tyres as the basic minimum before it could hit the road with the slightest hope of an MoT. Being laid up for 12+ years what are my chances of it becoming roadworthy without it costing an arm and a leg and a 2CV? I'll try to learn the Buyers Guide by heart before i next go to look at it with a long screw driver!

I hope hard 2013 reality kicks in before rose tinted 1993 nostalgia takes over! :)

Roger

Great site by the way

Hi Roger If you've got space then go for it!

From what I can gather from this forum, rust under the car seems to be a big problem in the UK and where you stay. All to do with salting the road when it snows. We don't have that problem in France.

I bought my second R4 10 months ago. It had been sitting for 15 years. No rust, but obviously it needed new brakes.tyres etc. I haven't even started the engine yet. Just very content messing about with it over weekends.

You could probably check the condition of the oil and try and turn the motor over manually to check that nothing has seized.
Take your camera with you next time
Good luck

When searching for something in my loft a few days i accidently came across negatives of my old 4s! It must be a sign surely? :D I took them to the photographers, got them developed and share them with you below. I'd forgotten how scruffy my two cars were, even the one that was being driven on a day to day basis.

This was the 1985 daily car:

B789YFB Rear.jpg

B789YFB Front.jpg

This car was bought for spares for £75, i drove it home and cashed in the remaining tax (£40) so it cost me £35! However, as you can see, it was in pretty rough shape, and having been owned by an elderly gentleman bore a few 'war wounds'!

Still no decision on the red car, and i don't know if these photos are encouraging me (nostalgia) or scaring me (the reality of rust etc.)

Wcome to the forum and go for it! I'd be checking the rear suspension mounting and associated chassis as the main problem area first though!

Hi Pepper!

Thanks for the welcome and for the advice on the main problem area to be aware of - it's easy just to look at the obvious things e.g. front wings.

Not sure that
go for it!
is the advice I need though!

Just back from holiday and it's owner is now away so nothing happening for a while but i'll keep you posted.

just a quick hello rom conlig co.down

Hello Roger I am from co down myself and am in need of a bit of advice in the renault end if you can spare any. First of all my car is a renault espace and has only done around 90 k miles 2002 model mk3 I think I am having a few problems with the gearbox and engine department. The mechanic says the gearbox is leaking oil from between the bell housing and engine although it seems dry to me and the other problem I get is a red oil can after the car has started up not sure what this is but it has plenty of oil and runs well when it warms up a bit any help would be apreaciated also shoul say the car broke a fan belt a few weeks ago and had to replace the power sterring pump with a new one it has had a timing belt done and clutch fan belt pulley brakes most of everything else in between but this has me puzzeled

Hi mad001, welcome to the forum. I'm afraid though that we're a Renault 4 community so aren't really the correct people to be asking about Espace problems.

However if anyone does know anything I'm sure they'll let you know.

I just thought I'd reply in case you thought we were a bunch of rude so and so's!

Hi Mad001, go into the search function at the top of the page and search for "R4L Oil Pressure Light". Then scroll down to Angels reply. Thats probably the same problem that you have, which turns out not to be a problem, lucky for you!

Hello everyone,

Sorry i've been a bit quiet here for a while but life has been busy though i have looked in on the forum.

The update on the 4 of my first post is that it is remaining within the family of the owner and will be repaired and hopefully put back on the road. The 2CV that took its place is being rebuilt and coming along well.

Meanwhile, having decided that my daily driver Citroen XM was too good to be subjected to a winter on the road, i purchased a car which will provide transport until the spring/summer. It brings me into the Renault fold and i've found myself liking my little black Clio. It's a dCi which i put Nokian winter tyres on and, now that i have the thermostat replaced and it gets to proper operating temperature, it returns 57mpg and only costs £30 per annum to tax. What's not to like with those running costs! :)

I'll just take this opportunity to wish everyone on the forum a Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2014.
Roger
