Hi Guy's
just a quick note to introduce myself, I live down on the Eastern Algarve near Tavira but originate from Saffron Walden in dear old Blighty. Well I have just purchased my 1st 4 GTL after lurking on your site for a number of months. Been trying to get an idea on prices because cars in Portugal are horrendously expensive due to the PT Gov tax on cars, but I think I might have got a reasonable buy, just payed 1300 Euro for a 1989 GTL, 135,000 K's with MOT and Tax until the middle of next year, looks like it was resprayed about a year ago to quite a good standard and no rust in all the places you say to look. Drives well apart from wanting to stall at traffic lights and the engine hunts on tick-over, am going to have a look at the carb and see what I can discover. Apart from that the interior is in fine fettle as well. Having looked on your site I see you have another member from Portugal called Moth perhaps they could PM me and we could get to-gether and help each other out as Portugal is quite a small country. I do not have any experience with 4's but a lifetime of Race Car driving and preparation so hopefully nothing will present it's self that is not solvable.
No dout I will be back on with loads of questions so bear with me.

Sounds like an air leak on the carburetor, check all the vacuum pipes and the base of the carb itself, mines fine when running but is dreadful at tickover, I know I've got to get the carb base sealed better at some point in the future.

Welcome to the forum BTW ;)

PS we need photos ;) :)

Welcome to the forum :)
My GTL had all the same problems when I bought it, after replacing the worn ignition components, correcting the timing and tuning the carb it's much better.

Hello, there was quite a big army of r4 from Portugal in Thenay, nice guys and nice cars... I think it will not be difficult to meet each other, maybe there's a local club yet...
