Help with engine type

I just bought a very used 1989 Renault 4 R6. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of engine is in this model and how hard would it be to restore this engine. Where I might be able to get gaskets, ect... for it.

Hi,

you need to find the engine type which is usually stamped onto a thin metal strip attached to the engine somewhere. The car type may help as well, which is given on the metal plate located in the engine bay, usually on the bulkhead. This plate is referred to the 'oval plate'.

Hope that helps.

hi
unsure of exact spec of your van without oval plate details should be 1108cc
plate on engine should begin C1E or poss 688
engine parts will be easy , body parts and rusty chassis are more likely to challenge you first !

you could have had a lucky find though
engine is more or less the same as early r5s 1972- 1984
1985 on r5 supercinq and early clios use diferent version of C1E (head gasket is same and some internals)

post a photo and make us all jealous

ok, there are two metal plates on the bulkhead of the engine compartment.

the oval one reads:
2370
42 161

the other is rectangular:
B-0016
VS5237000
K0103798

I was able to find the one on the engine as well, after some thorough scrapping of the engine.
688 7/91
9 120279

Hopefully this information can help someone help me out. I am kind of sure that it is the 1108cc myself, but I just need some confirmation. If you can tell me what you would like pictures of, i'll be glad to post them.

what is wrong with your engine at the moment, because unless overheated badly or lack of regular oil changes (resulting in black death) it should last longer than the bodywork

sorry if i wasnt clear on reason for photo request just that for most people condition of bodywork is more of a concern
this forum is quite a friendly place and hopefully you understand my humour if you are translating this back to spanish (where are you at the moment)

but even i dont always manage my english very well
good luck
paul

I am curruntly in Spain, but I am in the military, so I am here temporarily. I am hoping to take the R4 back to the U.S. with me. The engine still runs fairly well, it has had a lack of oil changes, that is for sure. I want to clean it up and try and get it to run better than 80kph. If I am able to take it back to the states, I will most likely do a complete restoration of the car. Thank you for the information on the engine.
