Hi I am new to all this, I am currently looking to buy a car and would prefer something classic, and a renault 4 is looking a good buy. Was looking for some help of where i could go to find one. Have seen one on ebay at £3,600 but it is advertised on other places for 4,400 which after reading a lot of the internet seems to be a bit over the top.
Any advice would be gratefully received

Jeanette

Renault 4's are chic (chiche?) and rising in collectors' value, but for a UK enthusiast considering a R4 the first crucial question to ask yourself is : am I equipped/knowledgeable enough/prepared to put in regular and continuous maintenance on the bodywork. The engines are fantastically reliable (my 845cc machine has done 152000 miles and still gives 50 mpg) but the chassis is a rust-trap. The R4 was designed for 1960s Continental conditions, with reasonably dry weather, no salt on the roads and the winter temperature going through freezing point only a few times every year rather than (as in the UK) several times a day. The result has been that about half a million R4s were sold in the UK and there are now perhaps 3000 left of which only half are in running order - and I would suggest that all the problems arise from disintegrating chassis.

Another problem is that the majority of Renault dealerships in the UK are now completely useless as regards sourcing R4 spares. On the other hand, there are some good ones, and the expertise available on this website will mean that ultimately you should have no difficulty - most spares are still available new in France.

This is not intended to put you off : we're all committed enthusiasts - but it would be a terrible shame if you bought a R4 without awareness of the major pitfall as regards rust, and found that in a few years' time it had disintegrated to the point at which it was beyond repair, simply because you were not aware that they need constant chassiswork TLC.

Hi there Jeanette, welcome to the forum. What bench seat says is true but there are some nice examples out there which don't cost a fortune. Give Derek Flavell a call at Renospeed, 0208 694 1435, <www.renospeed.co.uk>, he knows his stuff when it comes to 4s, and he will give you some good advice I'm sure. He runs his own business rebuilding repairing and servicing 4s, and sometimes has them for sale. We bought ours from him, so can recommend him to you. I'm sure there is a 4 out there waiting for you, hope you find it, they are great little cars, and so much fun to own. Good luck, regards Brian.

Try b4 you buy?

Hi Jeanette,
The advice above is all good stuff and are good leads to get started. I recently purchased my R4 which underneath has had a little welding but is fundamentally sound, with a somewhat shabby looking (until I've sorted it) upper body. I noticed that you are in Herts which is where I am (I'm between St Albans and Hitchin in a small village).

If you have never seen / been in an R4 etc then you are welcome to pop over and have a look at my GTL. I'm not selling it so don't consider it a sales pitch as such but it might be of benefit if you wanted to check out what they are like / see where they go rusty etc. I haven't had it long enough to have needed to acquire that many parts yet so can't really comment on that score (though ebay France has currently been pretty sucessful for what I have bought). If you want too just send me a pm or I'm on 07765 713967.

My main point to mention is that sometimes the upper body can look really very good but underneath they are a frilly patchwork quilt of MOT bodges. Unfortunately the only way to be sure is to get underneath it and have a good look / prod about, because the state of the underneath determines if its worth keeping it on the road. At least they have enough ground clearance that you can look without having to put it up on axle stands...

Thanks
