high speed squeek

hello,

i am new and not quite sure how this technology works...

i have an '88 4TL (LHD) in which i have done a huge milage in the 18 months since ive had it. a few things have gone and i have delt with them: head gasket, rear wheel bearing, exhaust...

the ball race on the tension/guide wheel for the fan belt assembly croaked in the summer and i had to resort to tights for the trip home. this happened after a considerable amount of squeeking... (i am a newcomer to the world of mechanics).

at the top end of revs in each gear that bit of the same part of the engine (!) lets out a loud squeek which only seems to be remedied but a prolonged squirt of belt-slip, but tends to return. and thoughts, people?

i hope you can shed some light. i have a lot or respect for my car as i am only juts about older than it is...

phil

A high speed squeak is usually the result of a loose fan belt. However, if you are sure it's the tension wheel, get a new assembly from your Renault garage. If the fan belts are old then fit a pair of new ones. Check them by bending them backwards and see if there are splits between the teeth.

One possible clue - if the noise is worse in the wet then it's probably one of the fanbelts. If it gets better it is more likely to be one of the bearings. I'd side with Steve on the fanbelt tension at a first guess though.

thanks a lot guys. when the tensioner bearing went on the summer, the fan belt inevitablywore hrough so i replaced both. ill check the tension and also the bearings. if 'wet' is provided by belt-slip/WD/oil, then eith could be the case.

i have just been struck by the hideous thought that it could be the clutch bearing (if that is the term) when the engine is at mex revs... taking the car our of gear at any time it is squeeking stops the noise immediately.

ill take a look...

thanks, phil

Yoda would probably say "even more confusing that is". Course he'd know the answer too. Little sod!

Can't see how the load on the alternator or water pump would alter when the car is taken out of gear, but equally can't see how spraying stuff around the pulleys would stop the clutch bearing from squeaking.

Our own version of Yoda (Frederick the Frog) wrote something about the clutch actuation shaft seizing. That would make the bearing constantly rub against the clutch release plate as well as making the clutch a bit heavy. Worth a shot if you have some WD40. Otherwise have you got any oil in the gearbox?

nice one. the plot thickens. ill just grease EVERYTHING up till im back at home and ill have a good poke around.

clever frog, youve got there.

thanks
