I have a renault 4, gtl, 1987 and it has a little trailer.
there will be 4 of us traveling in the car, but how much can we safely tow?
thanks, morgan

This is not a definitive answer, but : the permissible weights should be shown on the chassis plate under the bonnet. One mine there are four weights given : 1025Kg (which is presumably the maximum authorised weight of the car alone (it weighs 670 Kg empty), 1545Kg : then there are two smaller weights : 500Kg and 570Kg.

This was off a French-market vehicle. My old R4 is a German-market machine and the second weight (1545Kg) is not given on the plate. The others are the same.

I imagine that 1545Kg is the Gross Train Weight i.e. maximum weight allowed for car on its own + passengers and luggage in car + total weight of trailer. In practice this would mean that your trailer with load can weigh about 450-500Kg : i.e. not a lot. Possibly the 500Kg and 570Kg are the maximum permitted weight for the trailer (loaded) on its own.

DVLA might be able to help. They have all sorts of obscure info on this sort of thing.

The handbook for our GTL says the towing weight is country specific, so doesn't list it. But an earlier handbook says the 845cc TL has a maximum gross train weight of 1440kg.

To The Rescue

Now this brings little to the discussion but...

An '85 Renault 4 1108cc GTL will pull 1200Kg. Wife's Corsa broke (I'm trying to get her to convert full time) and we towed it about 15 miles to the garage. 30mph most of the way but we made it. Up the hills and all. It didn't like it, but we got there.

I wouldn't like to do it again.
