How remove front hub?

Hi R4 friends,

I just dismounted the front drum brakes on my 850 cc. I removed brake shoes and their springs, handbrake cables and hoses, however I can´t loose the brake cylinder screws, because they are hardly reachable. There is a special spanner needed? I should remove the backing plates also, because the eccentrics are immovable. So I pushed the shaft back and released the four nuts on rear backplate side, but I can´t find a way, how to remove the hub and backing plate.

So please can you advise me, how to do that?

Greetings from cold Prague
Pavel :)

If you only need to remove the wheel cylinder, you will find that now that you loosened the backplate bolts, there is just enough room to fit a 10mm ring spanner over the screws.
If you need to remove the backplate, the hub must be removed first, by tapping it with a hammer and socket from the inside out.

It's a lot easier if you disconnect both ball joints and the steering arm, get the whole stub axle carrier in your hands and work it on a bench. However, it is by no means essential if you only want to remove the backplate.
Alternative to tapping it from inside after removing the driveshaft, is to use a slide hammer,if you have one.

Well done

Hi Angel,

thank you for your answer. At last, I found an other way. May be, it can be useful for other members:
- remove the wheel, brake drum and central hub nut
- remove the brake hose from the brake cylinder
- press the drivint shaft and release 4 nuts on the rear side (a big extraktor needed)
- remove 4 bolts with foursquare head
- turn the brake plate 90°frontward
- there is enough space for a 10# spanner to release and remove the brake cylinder
- and now push a good plug in the brake cylinder hole and knock out the hub by a big hammer. There is enough space for the hammer movement.
