Can someone PLEASE tell me how the speedometer cable is removed from the gearbox ?
The only book I have at present is Autopress 1961-70 and it has no mention of it in the handbook!
I have removed a 10mm bolt beside the cable entering the gearbox , thinking this was holding it in but it still will not move out ?
The top is white nylon and has no clip on the top so what holds it in ??
Any help ........anyone ?................

The bolt holds it in. When the bolts is removed only the only thing holding it is years of dirt and gunge.
Give it a good dose of WD40 or similar and be patient with sideways jiggling.

THANKS Geoff, got the bu**er off and new one installed........I truly believe cars have souls.....mine ( le petite cochon ) has decided to firmly resist being brought back to life ....preferring to sit motionless in the sun all day !

P.S. ......and isn't that little 10mm bolt a joy to get back in

Ah, yes. The secret to that, which I remember too late to help you, is that it doesn't need to come all the way out. Just loosened enough to free the cable. Makes it a lot easier for the reassembly stage.

Of course, when the cable is stuck in like yours was it's hard to know when the bolt is 'loose enough'

Hello...cars do have souls ( my opinion )
When i talk to my VW Bug friendly... most of the time he drives happily...but when i talk angry to it... then Bug say`s "NO"... and something will brake down. Our R4 seems to dis like to stay outdoors al the time... when he is in my garage to fix something on it, always something else will brake down or won`t start when i am done fixing... like he doesn`t want to leave the garage.. Then i speak friendly but firm to him.. then he eventualy wil start en go out the garage... o_O

They like it when you play music to them.......preferably old French music, like Edith Piaff or Charles Trenet

I will try "Non, je ne regrette rien" ...............even though I do regret it............but I think threatening it with the breakers yard might work better ;)

Hello, i know it's an old thread but i wanted to colaborate with a picture,

i have just change my speedometer cable half an hour ago.
And yes when i pull from the end of the broken cable at the gearbox, the nylon gear assembly came too.
Here's a picture.
I was affraid to arrive to mount it with the new cable, all aligned with the 10 Bolt, but i have had succes at my first atempt.
It was no an easy procedure, i´m talking about the whole cable, and the other end, at the clocks..
But now i'm happy.
Here's some pictures.
Sorry for my english!
Fabian

Hello Fabian, I'm glad you managed to fit the nylon back into the hole, I didn't know that it could come out so easily. I suppose the best way to remove the cable after unscrewing the 10mm bolt, is to hold the nylon block down with a flat screw driver and then pull on the cable.

I think that after many years, that hole is full of dirt and grease and that makes removal more difficult

Hello Mojobaby, you are right, i didn't expected that the nylon part came loose...it's beca use i've unscrewed the 10 bolt too mutch, so all the "system" becomes loose.
Anyway it was the only way to take the cable end apart, as you said dirt and grease make it stiff!

What nice thread to ask some questions.
Ok Im planing to replace my cable soon., because my speedometer pointer is no longer static, but after watching this thread I have some questions. Since my cable still intact and I have pointer oscillations could those oscillations come from the nylon gear ,? And since my car as 470000 km isn't it better to replace also the nilon gear ..?

Fernando, on some cars the inner cable can be removed from the casing for cleaning and lubrication, bit I think that the R4 cable is a sealed unit.
Its possible that the square hole in the nylon block is not square any more, especially after 470K km. Perhaps the corners are a little "rounded".
Also check the length of the cable to make sure there is no damage.
I've never had to replace my cable so I'm not sure how it fits to the back of the dashboard

Hello Fernando.
It's possible that as mojobaby sais the female on the nylon gear is damagwd, but is quite possible that the cable is damaged, close to break.
You will find info on how to remove the dashboard, you need to do it to unscrew the clocks, and then to arrive to the back to free the cable.
The attachment is easy and you can screw it by hand and then with a plier you can do the final touch.
If you are going to do it, think to change blowed bulbs too.
Before to buy a new cable you can take a look at the other end, on the gearbox, to be sure your nylon gear is good.

Damaged cable is far more likely if it has got bent or kinked slightly it may be worth try to straighten any obvious damage
Also possible to route cable with too tight a curve and needle will flicker at certain speeds
Be aware lhd and rhd different lengths
Later dash type 1980 push on fitting
Pre 74 different too as different gearbox drive location 334 box
In case you get offered wrong cable if you decide to go for replacement

Hello I Will do both jobs together, cable and nylon gear and instruments panel all at the same time, in the mean time I noticed that the pointer oscillates more when I'm driving faster than 120kmh, and I also checked in the Portuguese shop,, and they have all the parts cable , female and male and even the other part that goes on the speedometer, but they are expensive parts, like all the parts they sell grr.
But by now I need to find someone that as disassembled completely an instruments panel. I need some lights before I start
