Idling and stalling issues

First off, I'm not mechanically minded - so it's frustrating when I can't work out what's wrong and why.
Recently bought a '88 TL which runs well, but has a habit of cutting out at junctions (usually the first time it has to stop - and only seems to do it on this first occasion).
Afterwards, when idling, it seems to be ticking over too fast (usually after the engine is warm, and car has been driving for quite a while).
It's due a service and oil change, which will be carried out sometime over the next couple of weeks, by a mechanic (he's a 2CV and old citroen specialist, but knows old Renault engines quite well). Is there anything I should ask him to look at in particular in light of the idling and stalling issues?
Any words of advice much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi there, personally I would wait until your car has been serviced, that might through up an issue with maybe the electrics or quite possibly the carburettor. If your man knows old cars, trust in his experience. Good luck, Brian.

Just a thought Tim, it could be that the mixture is a bit weak, quite common with old carburettors, they allow air to get in through worn spindles, or you've maybe put the choke in a little early. The fast tick-over when hot might be simply that the idle screw needs adjusting.
Brian.

There is a nearly endless list of things that could cause that sort of trouble - lets see if your mechanic can work it out. If you're lucky it's just the carburettor needs tuning.

Fingers crossed with the carburettor, then. I'm in the process of trying to get both my R4 and mini booked in with him for work (I'll try and get some photos when I'm there - he's always got a great selection of lovely old cars in for work).
Thanks again for your ideas.

I have used colour tune for a few years now and it seems to to the job, just a bit of tinkering with the carb mixture and making sure the points and plugs are set okay, cheap and worth the money in the long run
