Hi

need help . Got new ignition coil for the car but after i put it on it started chuging and pulling in second gear? Does it need adjusting

THANKS

If you haven't disturbed anything else, apart from changing the coil then the coil might be suspect. However, before condemning a new coil are you sure (Quite sure....?) you have wired the coil correctly? If you've wired it INcorrectly the electrons will be flowing the wrong way across the plug, which will reduce the engine's performance by abut 50%! Check the the "ignition live" feed is connected to the "+" terminal on the coil and the points to the "C.B." terminal. If they're reversed you'll have the problem I outlined above..... More advice if you need it..... just ask!

Hi
Thanks i have adjusted the points (witch are new)to 0.4mm .does the positive on the coil go to the condenser because i have put the negative on the coil goes to the condenser ? what else could it be ?
THANKS VERY MUCH

There are two connections to the coil, [apart from the big thick high voltage (haute tension) wire, which is connected to the centre of the distributor] and one of these becomes live when the ignition is switched on. This wire connects to the "+" side of the coil. The other thin wire goes onto the "C.B." connection on the coil and then goes into the body of the distributor, where it is connected to the points.

This is how it works: when the points are closed the 12 volts runs from the battery, through the key switch, into the coil, out of the coil and to the points, then to earth, thus completing the circuit & "charging" the coil. As the points open the circuit is broken and a MASSIVE voltage (usually about 15-30,000 volts) is sent along the big thick wire, to the distributor, where it's directed to one of the four spark plugs. All of this happens many thousands of times a minute, so it's clear why everything needs to be set up properly!

If you're still stuck, I'll try to explain more-just ask!

thanks
before i put the new coil on it was going perfectly but once i put the coil on it started to chuging and pulling in second gear?can you explaine about the points cause when i adjusted it it went a bit better
thanks

Yes, that's a possibility. Fitting a new one would eliminate another problem. The only thing I would say is that you ONLY replaced the coil and it's only since then that your problems have occurred.... If you change the condenser and things don't improve, don't discard the original condenser, as it's probably O.K!

Ou êtes-vous en France? Les points étaient-ils nouveaux? Il-y-a une graisse protectrice sur les nouveaux points, qui à supprimer AVANT de fitment. Peut-être une chose........

if it was working fine before changing the coil then why change the coil?
this would suggest the old coil was fine and the new one either faulty or incompatible with the rest of the system

adjusting the points gap changes both when the points open - ignition timing - and how long the coil is energised for - dwell angle

if the ignition timing is wrong then the spark comes at the wrong time in relation to the piston position and you will get poor running
if the dwell angle is wrong then you may not get current passing through the coil for long enough to give a decent spark when the points open and get poor running.

the condenser minimises sparking at the points when they open and close. The sparking erodes and oxidises the points surfaces causing a change in points gap and a change in conductivity of the points - so they don’t conduct electricity when closed as well as they should. Both of these result in poor running.

i have heard of many new condensers fail out of the box or very quickly. Often you are better sticking to old new stock ones.
failing that put a new polypropylene or polyester film capacitor on instead. Get one rated at 600v plus and 2.2microFarads like these.

just noticed new points too!

they can be a pain too ! Often newly made points aren’t made right.
I have had a new set of points alter the ignition timing by about 35 degrees!!
the heel on the new points was in a different place in relation to the mounting screws not by much as it fitted fine but pinked like a b*******!

you should check your static timing too
