I had a thought yesterday: Supposing that the 845cc engines are tuned up to run on "normal" petrol (88-90 RON),could increasing ignition advance make them run better? (thinking that the lowest octane number they have to tolerate today is 95 RON).On any four stroke piston engine, having as much advance as possible, without pinking, is beneficial for engine torque, and also fuel consumption. On the other hand, all these engines have small piston diameter, in theory that means the mixture burns off faster and there is no need of too much advance.(I have noticed at some time that Ventoux engines are not very sensitive to incorrect ignition setting,as opposed to 1108cc.)
Considering these thoughts, I set up the ignition advance at 9 deg.BTDC on my '75. This seemed to make no considerable difference (no pinking either) to the way the car ran, except maybe a little better handling when cold (expected). I have not covered enough kms yet to measure fuel consumption accurately. My question is, had anyone experimented with this in the past? It would be helpful to know your opinions and experience...
