Importing - the rules?

I would be very grateful if anyone knows the procedure for importing a car, import tax, how to get insurance for the journey, re-registering etc. I did do this in 1969 but suprisingly I can't remember what to do and anyway it's bound to have changed now. I think that importing is the ony way for me to find an R4 in wizzy woo condition.

Many thanks

No real idea, but Renault 4s are definately exempt from the nasty SVA. I think you need an MOT and can apply to your local vehicle licencing office for a registration number.

There's a government site with fairly straightforward hints.

Thank you so much, Malcolm. Don't know what SVA is, so I'm really pleased I don't have to bother about it!

Its a few years since we registered a 'foreign' car in the UK - Citroen H van I think, but make sure you get all the documents from the previous owner (here its Carte Grise and Controle Technique), you can usually get it MOT'd on the chassis number or foreign reg no, and then go to the local office of the DVLA - we found that Swansea were hopeless and gave us the wrong info. You will probably need to take it to the local office to get it inspected - only usually so that they can check that the chassis and engine numbers tie up with the paperwork.
