Hi to all!
I'm an American recently moved to Croatia and acquired a delightful "Che-tir-ee" (the number 4 in hrvatski) but don't have sufficient language skills to chat up the owners of all the other 4GTLs I see zooming all over.

Mine is tan and since the roof rack says made in Yugoslavia, I'm guessing its a Slovenian make at least 15 years old, plastic grill so...past 1977 right?

Here's the rub. Some helpful person used excessive force when closing the hatchback door (I will admit it was a little wonky before) and the catch/latch part on the inside of the back door is bent in a way that keeps it from hooking onto the bar.

The hatch door was stuck closed so I took off the one screw and washer holding the latch and the lock on the outside to the lid. So the hatch is open but now the problems begin...

First, the original screw and washer won't hold the two pieces together to the door so I get a longer screw which works to hold the pieces in place on either side of the door. And I (to reduce wiggling I hope) put a replacement screw/washer (canabalized from the roof rack) on the left side of the latch.

Next I (tripping the switch properly) try to catch the bar but no luck. I clean the latch up and it appears to be a bit loose and one side is bent even though the spring is fine. I put lock to latch without the door in the way and everything is fine. But not when I attach it to the hatchdoor.

I have found both of the parts I don't need on the web, the key lock for outside and the bar that is held to the rear bed. How do I get this latch thing?

Here's a picture...what is this called?

And what about those eyebolts on either side of the lock? Is this some kind of manual stop so your trunk lid doesn't get slammed and bend the latch?

Thanks in advance,
RebX

Is your tailgate lower part OK? If it has been dented or badly repaired, it will not shut properly.
Also make sure that it is aligned properly (if not align it by loosening the two nuts on the inside top corners.
The part in the photo is the tailgate lock (or latch? a native English speaker should define it!). If it locks on the pin then you know it functions OK. Is the pin centered on the body, so when you close the tailgate it aligns with the lock? Or maybe you installed it the wrong way round (it can be done)?
Both lock and pin bolts are there to fasten them, they have no other task. There are two rubber blocks on the tailgate bottom lip to stop the tailgate from being slammed.
