Hi there,

We are in need of a horse transporter and the Citroen HY is top of my list; I have even convinced my partner.
Does anyone know of what to look for when giving one a going over before purchase; what are their weak points etc. We are looking at the diesel model.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

We had an HY camping car in the past.
Diesels are very noisy, not that the petrol ones are quiet!
Make sure its got good tyres, I have a feeling that one of the sizes - possibly 19 x 400's are no longer made. Check that the brakes have been recently overhauled on the front particularly, the cylinders are very expensive and there are two on each side on the front, a complete overhaul of the front brakes could set you back a four figure sum, the drums are pretty big and its a time consuming job setting them up.
If you are not going to do many miles / km its worth considering a petrol one, they are more common and its a fairly robust old motor - make sure its a 1911 cc one though - a lot of horse / cow boxes had the 1628 cc one, which is even slower.
Ther is quite a lot of info on the internet - even a couple of sites in the UK.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply,
We are off to see an HY this weekend, a diesel, not sure on the year though.
Will let you know what happens.
If anyone has info on probs that I should be looking for please post.

Cheers

Just remembered - check the front wheel bearings, they are unique to this vehicle and the Traction Avant Big 6, several hundred euros each new if you can find them, my brother who is in the bearing trade had a client needing some and the only place they could find new ones was New Zealand!!!
