leaking petrol tank

Gentlemen. I looked under my car today and noticed a "damp" patch on the bottom of the petrol tank where the drain plug is. Any help on a cure? I am leaving for France in two weeks in the R4. Or at least I was. Is this a common problem. Is there a standard quick fix, so that my trip can continue.
Any advice gratefully received. Thanks. Edwin

If it a leak from the tank metalwork, you can buy tank-sealant epoxy online. Comes in two sticks which you knead together to make a putty which you then apply to the outside of the tank.

Put the following into the eBay Search bar : Pro Seal Instant Gas Petrol Tank & Radiator Repair Epoxy Putty 20g 62020 : and you'll find it. It worked well on my mower tank although you will need to clean the surface of your tank thoroughly (possibly take it off so petrol does not drain out) in order for it to adhere properly.

Alternatively look at this post from last year. I am not all that far from Lichfield.

Thanks for the email. How easy is is get the tank out. At the moment mine is quite full. The leak is from the drain plug. All looks well, i.e. no dent or corrosion, but there is wet petrol there.
Where are you and do you still have the spare tank?

To remove the tank you have to undo the tank retaining nuts including one that comes down from the floor inside the car. Plus dismantling the inlet pipe from the filler cap assembly and carefully unplugging the sender unit leads. Not all that difficult.

If the leak is from the drain plug I would have thought that, if you can remove it, then simply putting it back with some sort of sealing mastic applied to the threads would cure the problem. But I don't know how easy the plug is to remove : never done it myself. Nor what sort of sealant would be correct.

But possibly your tank is corroding from the inside. Any water in the petrol will accumulate at the bottom of the tank (since water is heavier than petrol and they are essentially immiscible). In which case resealing the plug would only be a temporary cure. But it might get you round France. The tank sealant epoxy, if applied liberally round the plug area, would be a temporary buffer against further corrosion holing-through (which will only progress slowly anyway).

I am in HR8.
