Liner seals

I have been going through my gasket set and I have found these, are these liner seals? I always thought that liner seals are some kind of rings made of rubber. As a matter of fact I do have set of those rubber rings laying around somewhere but I can't tell are they for 1108 ccm engine or for the Alpine engine nor what are they used for.

Well, rubber seals can't be applied in places that become very hot right? So I guess that liner seals aren't made of rubber. But who knows... ;)
 
The 1108cc liner seals are made of paper and look very much like that. The 1397cc liner seals are rubber o-rings. The design of the cylinder block is different between the two engines.

They go between the cylinder liners and the block (underneath the liners).
 
Be careful if you use these as they should be different thickness, measure liner projection above block.

Let me jump into your thread. What kind of seals a 1300 engine should have. Rubber or paper. Regarding paper seals how much the liner should protrude after installed, over the block. Are those different thicknesses supposed to be used to get the liner flat to the block?.

Hi lazyduck,
I don't have the measurements but I do know that the liner is meant to protrude above the top face of the block a specific amount. The different thickness seals exist to allow you to choose the one that gives you the correct protrusion. The protrusion is to get the seal and the head gasket to make a tight seal when the head is done up to tension.

No idea if this helps but the technical term I've seen used for the liner protrusion above the surface is liner 'nip'

Thank you Geoff and Andrew. What might be a reasonable/recommended protrusion over the block? I have no idea, never done this job myself. I saw once a mechanic checking this and I did not ask about it (It happened long time ago on my father's R8 engine).

According to the book: Protrusion of the liners above the cylinder block should be 0.04 to 0.12mm with the blue (0.08mm) seal fitted. If it's not correct try red (0.1mm) or green (0.12mm). Adjacent liners should be within 0.04mm of eachother.
