on my 850, the distibutor, when clamped down, can be rotated about 2mm (at its edge), due to the play in the spring/clamp device which mounts it to the baseplate....is this normal?...ade

there's no gasket shown in Haynes....the play is caused by the sprung pivot which joins the split clamp plate to the angled mounting plate which bolts to the engine....Adrian
 
Yes, I can see what you mean now. Not a particulary good design so leave it as it is or somehow build up any wear on the pivot pin, base plate hole with weld and fit a stronger spring to prevent it moving.
