M reg Espace ...help?

Hi all,
I bought a M reg renault espace champs elysees 2.2 auto. I have had a few probs with since I bought it but the latest one is, this morning as I was driving to work, The auto transmission/gearbox light came on on the dash this is the first auto car i have owwned and as I have no handbook or manual for this I dont know what this means (I'm a bit green)
Anybody have any idea

Check your g/box dipstick fuid level (engine running at tickover) wipe off - look for level mark and re-dip/test. Add fluid if necessary. Is the fluid clean/clear ( red tinted fluid common) or is it brackish brown/grotty with burnt smell? I have auto volvo and at 120,000 mls my light came on - the fluid was grotty and had it changed - light went out - 127'000 mls now without trouble. Changing oil yourself is messy and difficult without a ramp/lift - best left to a garage. Don't pull the engine dipstick by mistake.

I would imagine this would be the 4 speed auto in which case it wont have a dipstick - only way to test is to drop the triangle shaped drain plug from the sump when the gearbox temp is at a set value . over fill and let it drain to the correct level.
Tbh once the light is on it is usually too late for oil level faults
