Mask for Renault wheels

I would like to paint the wheels of my car properly which are supposed to be painted black and silver .

I understand there is a specific mask for these wheels, which could make painting them a lot easier.

In the picture linked below, there is what looks like either black paint or vinyl, as is on the ROstyle wheels.

Does anybody know where I can get the mask to paint these properly, or is there a set of vinyl to cover parts of the wheel?

I hadn't previously noted that your late GTL wheels (which Renault took from the R12/R16 when turning the GTL into the Clan, at least in France) are all silver, and don't have the black parts. I've never (knowingly) seen these wheels, only in books!

Is your R4 marked as a Clan?

(Incidentally, the R4 Savanne wheels where taken from the R5 GTL.)

It isn't marked as a Clan.

I asked its previous owner about this recently, and he said he never remembered it having any Clan decals.

I have seen many Renault 4s in France with these wheels, most of them post-'86 models.

I was planning on changing these wheels when I got the car in 2000, but they grew on me and they are one of the features I like most about it now.

Found one!

Hi guys! I've seen this mask on eBay-fr. several times looks to be made out of fibreglass (fibre du verre) This is one of those obvious objects the forum should have-then rent it out to members to get some funds in.... -R.

My 1991 Clan had ordinary GTL wheels. My 16 TL came with a set of wheels in the boot that are similar to Richard's, but 14". I bought one of those masks on Ebay, but it is very flimsy - like the clear packaging on an Easter egg. There are no holes in the mask either. These must be cut out before use. I haven't tried as I reckon I'll make a mess of it. I'll check asap with a bodyshop whether or not the mask is a good idea. I've seen a set of these wheels which were masked using butcher's tape. They took weeks to refurbish but the result was excellent.

Wow, where is the 1991 Clan now? I think I've seen it before.

I have found the masks on ebay, and you can tell from the pictures that they are very flimsy, although you don't have to cut out the holes. I think they're probably worth the cost if they reduce the time it takes (and thus labour costs) to refurbish them.

I sent the Clan, along with a 9 Auto, to a garage in Abbeyleix in July 2007. I no longer had room for them. I've no idea what happened to them after that, sorry! I got the 4 in 2004 from a lady in Cabra. She had previously owned three 4s, and when her last one was written off by joyriders in 1991, Parkgate Motors imported one for her, brand new from France. LHD was not an issue for her. She just wouldn't drive anything else! The car had done 207,000 kms in 13yrs. Every weekend she drove to Castleblaney, never any faster than 80 kph. The car had scraped through its 2 previous NCTs, but failed in 2004 on many items. I'd hoped to get them sorted, but it didn't work out. I taxed the car for 3 months in 2005 and used it daily until I got the 16. I'd luv to get a decent 4 some day...!

I could tell from the reg that it was in Ireland from new. It's a very unusual thing, a 1991 original Irish R4. I wonder if there's anyway I could track it down... It's been nearly 2 years. Do you reckon the garage in abbeyleix still has it?

I doubt it. I called in there last summer to find out what happened to them but staff were busy with customers. There was no sign of either car in the yard, field, workshop, barn - whatever! The owner is George Dalton: 057 873 1372 or 087 640 2614. I'd be surprised if he remembers either car as it was two years ago. The 9 had an NCT so he probably got a few quid for that. The 4 probably attracted the attention of some poor unfortunate who lost his life savings and family trying to make the thing legal. I'd hoped to send him my 5 also, but it refused to start, so I'm stuck with it :-)

Hmm.. I might give him a call. Is he a dealer, or will he mind some randomer such as myself giving him a call out of the blue?

I hope he hasn't dumped it. I might buy it off whoever and sink my own life savings into it. I presume it was the rear chassis causing most of the problems.

I've never seen a Super5 with the old style registration plate before. Very interesting. It's amazing how quickly those Super5s have disappeared off the roads. They still look so modern, and I was under the impression that they were reasonably well rustproofed.

He is a dealer yeah. Chance it, but the car needs a lot of work. Chassis was not in great shape. It also failed on emissions, slip test and a few other things. It's not obvious from the photos, but the car sat very high on the off-side too.

The 5 is from March '86 and has no rust at all. I've had it since 2000. I haven't rust-proofed it - just power-wash the chassis and keep an eye on it. Good luck in your quest. Let me know if u find it!

real question here would be Why do you need to mask the wheels? Planning a bank-job somewhere around Dublin are you? -R.

I brought the Renault 4 to North Coast Classics in Donegal, where Adam shotblasted and repainted the wheels.

They are very shiny and everybody thinks they are new wheels.

I also have new chrome-plastic centre caps from Renault to replace the old ones which had been painted silver.

They look much more interesting in design now and are more characterful than they were when painted all silver.

Attached are before and after pictures...

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread ... are the wheels painted first silver then black or vice versa?

Thanks
Robert
