Matching up R5TS 1400 to R4 GTL box in my R4

I've searched around the forum, but failed to find a clear answer - if one exists!

I found an R5TS 1.4 5spd, but the gear oil in the box is full of water, as well as NOT being an HA 01 with the overdrive, so I'm going to keep my trusty 4spd box.

The 1.4 has the pickup for the ignition electronics off of the freewheel and bellhousing for the 5spd [HA05 I think], so I suppose I must use those.

Are there any obstacles or conflicts in this mix? I've been reading all about different length shafts and longer bellhousings, etc, etc, etc...but usually it's a problem when trying to convert the R4 to 5spd box. I'm simply swapping the 1108 to 1.4 and keeping the same box, but wanting to keep the 1.4 completely intact with its ignition electronics...thus the need to keep the pickups.

Any experience or advice is much appreciated!

Hi Michael!
I put in same TX-motor 1400cc,used the bellhousing from a R5GTL 1300cc First tried to use the flywheel off the Gtl too,but that didn't fit
so found a "dual-weight" (double thichness) and that went in like a dream.
IMO you'll need an overdrive box or you'll end up with lots more gear-changing with no end gain.calmer rpms and general stress-relieve in
higher speed.
I have a spare 5-speed box (With long overdrive) in need of overhauling, if youre going to Thenay this July I could bring it along if you want
-If you PM we can discuss further details Price €125 incl.freight -Reid.

I would be interested, in the very near future, in the long overdrive box, but for now I would simply like to keep the 4sp box currently in the R4. Is this possible, considering the R5 bellhousing and its ignition pickup must be in the middle?
Running our BnB means that Thenay, and any summer travel, is impossible for us. Nevertheless, I'd remain keen on the long overdrive 5sp. I had been hoping the R5 TS box might be the HA 01, but sadly it isn't [as well as being full of water!]

Thanks, the tread was interesting, but more about the transverse, modern 1400 motors. I've got the pre-1984 one to put in, and just need to know how to incorporate the ingition pickup from the r5 bellhousing to the R4 bellhousing, or use the r5 one, and if there are any clutch or shaft length obstacles.

How about this one?
But why a 5 speed? The higher gear ratio is the same e.g. R4 GTL 4th is 3.2 and R5 TS 5th is also 3.2.

The mk 1 5electronic ignition bell housing is fatter/longer and if you boltt to 4 speed box you will struggle to have room for standard 4 speed mounting can't remember if the engine will move far enough back on rubber engine mountings
using the electronic flywheel you also need the special spacer to move starter motor backwards

So Paul, as you know I always like the simple solutions...so do you think I should scrap the electronic ignition entirely? I have had great use for 100k kms from the existing 1108 with int/exh manifolds, 32if7 carb, and ducellier distributor, so I don't mind the simple approach!
Personally, I haven't a clue if I can simply disconnect the electrics but keep the distributor, or whatever other changes, so that I can have the 1400 with normal points and vacuum advanced timing..

JdeW, I am going to use the current 4sp, and for that reason - the final ratios are the same anyway. Only one 5sp box has an overdrive, but it's not the one I got in the R5TS.

In theory the 1108 distributor will bolt in the 1.4 engine and run but probably not correct advance curve for it
They did make a 1.4 engine in r5 ts 1981 only with conventional setup
Chances of a distributor sitting available probably zero
Volvo 340 uses points distributors on 1.4 Renault engine so that is a possibility
Feeling rich and you could buy a 123 distributor and program advance your self
Maybe measure difference in bell housings and work out if you can get engine to sit further back by relevant amount
Experiment on your car now by unbolting front mount off crossmember and see if it will move back using crowbar by x mm
I am sure I accidentally fitted 4sp 5 box to r4 and wondered why I struggled to get front mounting in
