I am just about to take of the rear brake cylinder of my R4 which I believe to be bendex, the metric size 9 mill is too small and the 10 mill is too big, therefore I have to assume it is A/F 3/8 perhaps, can anyone confirm this.

Are you talking about the retaining bolts?? If so then do use a hexagonal socket - you could try 3/8AF - I usually use the first one that fits!
 
I Applied a fair bit of heat and they came off with the old pair of vice grips, if it had been anywhere else on the car I would have just cut them off with the cutting disc it saves time and trouble.
