Hi team, I know this has been covered before but I thought let everyone know I have done 7000 miles in mine in 4 weeks, most of which was at 70mph plus and I have achieved an average of 60MPG

I have kept track of my mileage at fill up's and the ammount. It's the most economical R4 I have ever driven. And I put that down to a new ducellier vacuum advance unit and the timing set to pink slightly up hill. I did also take the carb to bits and unblock the partially blocked jet in the bottom of the float bowl and removed the mushroom on top for a clean.

Off to get some 145/80 R13 tyres fitted now to drop the revs down at high speed. (I know I stand to loose some uphill pulling too)

That's pretty good considering R4 aerodynamics.

Anything that makes the car free rolling will help, also keeping the weight down. A lot of us carry all sorts of stuff around in the car boot unnecessarily and it can amount to a fair bit of weight, a bit like always having an exra passenger.

Yes it does now need new front wheel bearings and the off side drive shaft is clonking on full lock. Being left hand drive its the side that takes most abuse.

The first 2000 odd miles were covered in France 3 weeks ago. Three of us went down the a well stacked boot to the vendee. The up to Brittany then back to the vendee and back to Brittany again!

The the weekend after I drove from Cambridge to Harrogate came home Saturday night and went back Sunday so that was another 700 miles.

Last Tuesday I went to Grimsby in it and back in one evening. I arrived home at 3am and was very tired after eating too much in a French bistro. Another 300 miles up the A1.

That's 3000 miles already covered

Oh and Brighton via the old Kent road and back last night.
And it used no oil at all however it now needs another oil and filter change after all that. I wonder how long it would last if I did that much driving every month, oh wait I do haha

My red one was getting good MPG 52 ish on long runs.

THEN I did the tappets - now its rubbish :(
(Goes better tho)

The fuel consumption sticker in the front of my original 78 handbook says 44.8 mpg for a constant 56 mph./

I have owned my 4 for less than 6 months and now covered 41000 kilometres. That's 25476 miles. It is now going in for a full winter service and wax oil, antifreeze change and timing check as it has developed a hesitation when you put your foot down.

It also needs two new front tyres. It's currently on 135/70 13's and I have chosen to fit 145/80 13's like the F6 runs

Mine always manages 38 mpg, I fill up and record the mileage, I'm quite happy with this as it beats most of the other cars we own!

I did however snap the points at the MOT station the other day! whilst muckig around! I bet the replacement points don't last 70,000 miles and 18 years!

sorry to hear the pepper.

Astounding MPG

Mine has incredible fuel efficiency, and the fuel in the tank has lasted over a year! That said I guess taking it out of the shed and driving it would change things a bit...

sorry to hear the pepper.

The points snapping was my own fault as I was wheelspinning the nuts off her showing off!

Luckily I had a spare set under the dashboard, changed them over in ten minutes, borrowed a dwell angle meter off the workshop and sorted the dwell out and all was working again in twenty minutes. :p

Serves me right for having wheel spinning competitions with the MOT tester :D
