EDIT> DeCarbon dampers are available again see page 3 of this thread for details.
-------------------------------

Has anyone found an affordable source of gas pressurised dampers in the UK (preferably deCarbon)? Ian mentioned he'd had a quote of approx £350 for a set of 4 from the only person that seems to advertise on the web. Which seemed a bit much. I know Renault don't sell them anymore - they sell Sachs-Boge dampers which fall apart in 5 minutes.

Failing that - anyone prepared to post from Europe? I could use 4 rear dampers and 2 front.

My GTL is currently damperless at the rear. Fine when I'm driving in economy mode, but I was in a bad mood this afternoon and it was really scary. :eek:

You've been confused by http://www.renault4.co.uk/tech-dampers.htm ?

Gas pressurised all round are the best. Those dampers that are supplied with a strap around them otherwise they'd expand. They are essential for the rear, but for the front your ordinary dampers could be fine.

OMG :o I have non expanding dampers in the back, or at least one that I know because I've bought two MONROE dampers and installed one, I think the other is also non expanding :o And I ask myself why the car behaves funny when cornering over rough surface.

..Good news Malcolm..

and for your interest I posted this thread last sunday but it has got lost..

I have bought you a pair of De Carbon pneu front shocks on French ebay.

I bought 4 for 600 euros - a bit of a bargain I think you will agree - We can split the cost?

I will collect them from France in a couple of weeks and will get yours to you in Bedford asap.

Think I must have bought the last full set on Earth on eBay:D, took a little patience but it was worth the £40.00:lol:and the wait.
They're currently being attached to the Pornmobile as I type, along with new ball joints all round, track rod ends and rear brake shoes.
Can't wait to find out how it drives, do the shocks really make that much of a difference?

Rudi.

Not sure if this is any use but cofap dampers (part of magnet marelli it seems?) have R4 mentioned in a parts list I found. They specify a super or gas charged version for front but only a super version for the rear. Part numbers are

front super:B.47238C.Y
front gascharged: GB47238C.Y
rear Super: B.47239C.Y

for the R5
L, TL, GTL
R 1220, R 1221, R 1222,
R 1225, R 1227 2.72 -> 79
R 1391, R 1395, R 1397, R 1399 80 -> 84

they specify gascharged: GB47387C.Y

probably pointless info but there you go.

Your problem may exist because you didn't fit the shock absorbers as a pair. I have had equally good experience with non pressurised shocks.

Dampers could well affect ride height. They'll all have different characteristics, so after a few bumps some will stick the suspension high and others low. Worn ones will do what the springs want to do. The suspension would probably keep it's set after you've stopped so dampers could affect ride height. Best fitting a matching pair for that reason anbd many others.

What's more important to me is if Delphi actually sell the DeCarbon dampers why can't you actually buy them?

I'd forgotten about him -I think Ian tried him. He was after £300 for a car set which seemed very steep at the time. Though if that is the going rate maybe I'll bite the bullet and order 4 rears.

I should be up for a set of the fronts Ian. Hope you didn't really pay 600 euros - I bought a pair of front ones recently on eBay for £35 for the pair.

Dear Greeney, Would you be able to tell me who is selling them for €150 per pair? My car has started to act extremely strange and I think it needs new shocks

Typically shock absorbers do not affect ride height (even gas pressurised oned) but on the R4 (low spring rates) you may find that the height alters (especially if you fit gas/oil shocks in place of oil ones). The funny thing is that it would get lower on the rear!
I can find Delphi (deCarbon) here at around 100 euros a pair, and since they are current production, I can't see why you cannot find them...maybe noone has them in stock and need to be ordered?
