new type of electronic ignition ive found

Must be a recent development - they are very popular with Citroen 2cv / Dyane / Ami / H van owners, and are reckoned to be a big improvement over standard fittings in those cars.

123 ignitions

They are nearer £300 plus vat for the r4 I have one on order,so I will let you know how it works out.
The supplier in the UK is Southern carbs, the manufacturer will not supply direct.
You can find prices and links on the RCCC R4 Register on our forum Gary

I've never really had a problem with points. They need adjusting every 10,000 miles or so, but it only takes a few minutes. Not like the old MGs that you need to fiddle every 1000 miles. And the R4 is more handy than the Citroens in that no body panels need be removed before you can fiddle with the points. :D

Vacuum advances and advance springs can go funny, but replacement points distributors are less than £75. I tend to source them from spares cars.

Which advance curve are you going for Gary? The Solex 32 carb might benefit from a R5 curve.

i spoke to southern, he told me the price on the phone, maybe he made a mistake , if its £300 i wont be getting one,the car only cost £250 itself !
i was in 2 minds with the price at £220

123 ignitions

There is a big difference in price with or without Vac
My quote was £199 plus VAT No VAC
£299 plus VAT With VAC.

I agree with Malcolm, but it would be interesting to hear from someone who fitted it to a R4.
It is very popular in 2CV circles, since these engines are very sensitive to the correct advance curve, which alters adversely when the bob weight springs wear out.

ive made a temp "repair" to mine
ive taken one spring off and shortened it
not exactly scientific and accurate but ive managed to return the static timing to the correct position and the pinking is almost gone
still not running too well as the advance curve wont be correct now but at least the risk of holing a piston is gone whilst i sort out another distributor

ive a spare femsa off a gtl but the vacuum diapham is holed and no one sells this ive found yet,no springs available for the ducellier one either

I agree with Malcolm too, the mechanical points are cheap, easy exchangeable and quite reliable. However the high technology is attractive, as gainless. Have you any idea, what dissembles the 123ignition distributor inside?
