Newly adopted a 1983 R-TL

Finally purchased my first 4L. I'm so happy, its been Christmas for the last two days. He was built by FASA Renault in Spain, and had only one owner, which I really liked. With the exception of a few home made touchups, most of the piant is still original, and only 141,000 KM.

It runs well and is FUN to drive, can't stop smiling....

Would appreciate any feedback on the following.
(The registration certificate indicates the engine has 4 cylinder 1.108 yet the Booklet marks 852 in cm3 ??)
When starting in the morning, black smokes exists the muffler, after a while stops and doesn't reappear until the following morning.
Currently I'm in Europe, and was wondering what engine oil would you recommend?
Gear oil?
Spark plugs?
Air filter and oil filter?

Looks a lovely car - congratulations!
If the engine plate has 688 on it, it'll be 1108 cc; if 813 (and unworked on since manufacture) 852cc.

GL4! @angel said several times...
GL5 is what you need and that is what @angel and @reidalpine wrote several times...

@JdeW , I used the wrong one in my first R4.
"The oil to be used must be of the API GL4 standard (SAE 80 or SAE 75) and oils displaying the API GL5 and API GL4+ standard should be avoided because they may contain sulfur additives which attack the bronze of the rings and crowns. This standard is displayed in small on the cans and it is sometimes necessary to look carefully. The recommended viscosity of the oil is 80W90, but failing that, 75W80 oil can be used because API GL4 oils are increasingly difficult to find."

You might have a different make distributor fitted but this article may give you some pointers ( from ‘TecTips’ , top of home page) , if you have moved the dizzy slightly the set up process will be the same to restore correct timing:-

Now the carb. I believe the mixture to be rich, since when the choke is on the muffler emits black smoke. When driving there is no BS. Tried adjusting the mixture screw, which I believe is the one with the spring,, view image. Turned it all the way in, but there is still the BS. Any suggestions?

You have the spring compressed, so I think you have the mixture to lean and not rich.

See this post

If the engine will not stall with idle mixture screw fully in, it's idling through progression circuit because throttle butterfly does not fully close. Check and rectify this fault, then reset idle speed and mixture.
It' s worth checking float level height and that float needle valve does not leak. Make also sure air filter is clean
