Hello!

I`m new at this forum and my English is not great.

I have fitted an 1289ccm engine from a R5 TS to my Renault 4, i have connected all wires using a wire diagram, but there is no spark at the plugs. There it neither no spark at the distributor.

I have connected + from the ignition key to + on the coil and - on the coil goes to the distributor. I have set the points at the distributor. There is new spark plugs, plug wires, coil, condenser, but still there is no spark. My skills at distributor isn`t the best, so i hope maybe some could give me some advise of what to do or not no! :)

Torkil.

Hi there! Welcome to the forum!

With ignition problems you should only change one thing at a time, or you will never know where you're going! To start with, make sure you have a decent voltmeter that measures 0-20 volts. Now check that the battery is fully charged and the connections are in good condition. Next check that 12 volts is reaching the "+" side of the coil when the ignition key is switched on. If it's not you need to trace back along the wires to the switch and find where the 12 volts has gone.

Assuming there IS 12 volts at the coil you need to check that then points are opening & closing properly. If you place a voltmeter across the coil the voltage should rise to 12 & drop to 0 as the points open & close. Again, if they don't, you need to find out why. If this all works out OK then the coil may be faulty, even though it's a new one! If there's 12 volts at the coil and the points are breaking the connection at the right time, then the coil may have failed. You should also check that the earth side of the points is properly earthed, too. More advice if you need it.

Thank you for a god answer! Today it fired right up, the reason of no spark was bad contact for ground on the distributor! :)
