Sorry to ask a string of dumb questions - you can see I'm new to R4's - but I cant seem to get my air filter off. It's an 86 1.1 gtl. The wing nut comes off no probs, but either twisting firmly or pulling, I cant get the box off the carb, let alone access the filter element.
I dont want to pull too hard in case I damage something. There's not a hidden screw is there?

I've only driven my 4 a few short distances so far - but it seems easy to stall. If I let the clutch out with the engine ticking over, I have to give the throttle a blip, otherwise it will stall. Can any of you experienced drivers explain if there is a particular technique to the 4?

I'm usually ok at adapting to different cars. Dont get any clutch trouble from my Smart car!

Old Petrol cars will stall a lot easier than modern diesel or petrol cars, as they can't adjust the timing and fuelling like a modern car can!

It may be the timings slightly out or that there is a leak in the air pipe to the distributor.

If your car has the standard metal casing then the top should come off once you've removed the wing nut. This tells me that your air filter hasn't been changed for a long time and is probably very dirty - hence contributing to the running problems!
I guess that the rubber on the filter element is sticking to the outer case or the base plate. Try tapping the casing gently to see if it breaks the seal. There's nothing you can damage unless you are very heavy handed.

It isn't one of those funny one piece all in one air filters left?

Its a metal thing, much deeper than that plastic all in one on e-bay. I assumed it would split open allowing me to drop in the air filter. Ive tried to attach a pic.

Still cant get it off - useless ol me!

Grab the pipe that goes in in the air filter. Try to spin the whole cover a bit to one or another side.

That worked for me.

It just needs some more muscle!

As Godlike says, take the outer air hose off and then use the stub of the pipe to give you extra leverage, they do come to pieces!

Lovely tidy car by the way, any more pictures?

Thank you Pepper (and Godlike) - will post some pix - just so busy getting to know the car atm.
When I post pix, which forum section do I go to?
Thanks
Rick

What would I do without this fantastic forum and you fantastic people! I had exactly the same problem as snes and although I guessed correctly how it should come off, I didn't want to force it in case it broke something on the carb that I didn't know about. Thanks :-)

So it seems that it is worth leaving old posts searchable
Biggest problem is when we chat a bit far off original topic as trickier for locate solutions

I spoke to soon. I still could not get it off and had to remove the carb. I made a video in case anyone else has the problem in the future as it's useful to be able to see underneath and how it works.
