Petrol economising

I've just been given a renault laguna 1.8 automatic 2005 model .
It seems to be using alot more petrol than my manual car. My question how do I save petrol any tips?
Do automatics use more petrol than manuals?
Or is it how you drive them .

Automatics do tend to use a lot more fuel than their manual counterparts.

If you;ve been given it then I suppose it using more fuel does become less of an issue though!

Do they use much more? The orange light comes on.And this indicates i'm running out of petrol but i've driven for 3 days with the orange light on .How much petrol would be left when the orange light comes on.
Just got the car and trying to work out fuel lol
