Petrol line question

I have a 1974 R4 ,and had a problem with petrol pipe where the line bends at rear and at front- it had rusted. So, I decided to replace with new pipe. My question relates to where pipe runs into the hose line out of tank.
Do you need to drop tank, or do you access from above ?
Since I am replacing all new lines I would like to replace this hose also.
I do not have access to a manual currently.

You will need to drop the tank to replace the rubber hose from the sender unit to the metal pipe. The tank is supported at the rear by the spare wheel carrier which is bolted to the chassis. I hope the bolts are not rusted in for your sake. Only replace this rubber hose if absolutely necessary. However, if you do get the tank out, it's a good opportunity to clean off any rust and treat the tank to a good anti rust paint, and to spray the inside of the chassis legs with waxoyl or Dinitrol etc.

hi spencer
love your pics and good luck with your car
just to warn you if you end up removing tank to be careful not to bend the filler neck when removing, as it will crack the joint resulting in a diificult to repair seepage of fuel

Thanks for that and my guess was to drop the tank. The bolts don't look to rusted, but will soak them in penetrating fluid for a week just to be safe and clean the tank as suggested. On the filler neck it seems to have a jubilee clip so if that is removed the neck should be ok.
I am trying to use the word petrol on here instead of gas- so if I do forgive me y'all.
Still cracks me up after 14 years here when in a 'petrol' station they say- "You have gas as well ?" when tallying bill. In Florida they have neon signs which read " We now have crabs" outside seafood restaurants and nobody sees the humour. I always like to ask the waiter if he has crabs.

Petrol Tank Guards ???

Trying to drop petrol tank- have managed to undo all bolts holding tank in place, removed spare and loosened petrol neck-- problem now is the 2 bars that run underneath tank- they prevent tank from dropping.
Has anyone removed these 2 bars ? Are they tank guards ?

Spencer

Probably they are torsion bars for the suspension - best not to remove them. The mounting for the spare wheel carrier needs to be unbolted from the chassis rails (2 bolts each side) and the tank pulled backwards enough to remove the feed pipe and wiring, and also the breather pipe to the filler neck before completely removing.
