Hi Everyone,
Today I was cleaning the outside of my petrol tank. It's off the car and has been empty for about ten years. When i turned it over this (see picture) little filter fell out. What do i do to replace it?
Also for the restoration folks here, can the petrol tank go back on the chassis before the body does? I cant remember the order i took them off in :)

Thanks
Nick

That filter is fallen of from fuel sender unit. Try to put it back to pipe on fuel sender and try to take it of...if it goes easily than you need to secure it somehow ( do not know how)

Petrol tank can go back before body, it is much easier to install it, connect pipe to fuel pump and wiring for petrol gauge.
But be careful to screw it from below so in future ( if you need it) you can take it down without removing body

ahah. thanks . I didn't realise how easy it was to pop out sender. Now that I have i see that it has its filter. This one must have fallen in there years ago. Heres a picture of a sender in case anyone is wondering. Im guessing the wiring for the gauge is hanging out of the body somewhere. Ill investigate that later.

Hi Nicky

be careful with the sender its very delicate . The electrical connections are very fine and rely on compression/crimped joints.
While you have the sender out carefully have a peep inside with sunlight to aid you. Make sure there isnt loads of rust. Might be an idea to check for any leaks too before you refit.

Right o. Thanks for that. I'll find a box for it whilst I clean up and paint the outside of the tank. I looked inside with help of torch. It's all super clean and shiny so hopefully all good.

The sender wire is orange, and comes out of the body at the left rear corner.

They way I cleaned up the fuel sender unit on my Honda GL1000 was to soak it in malt vinegar for two days. A very gentle process and it came out like new. And yes, the windings were fragile.
