I had an advisory on the last MOT - Play in steering rack inner joints.

Is there any way of fixing it?

Has anyone got a diagram of an exploded steering rack? Its a 1985 1128 GTL

Cheers
Rich

Yes,remove rack gaiters and you can unscrew the track arms from the end of the rack and replace them,Quinten Hazel do them, there are usually some on e-pay or any good motor factor should get them. Can be done in situ but fiddly, its not that hard to get the rack off on the 1108 engine. Sorry no pic.

Thanks jonigel, I was thinking it was more than this ie the internals if the rack having where, is that not the case.

The ball and socket is where the wear takes place, same as the track rod ends, but that is what was pointed out on the mot? If it is the actual rack and pinion, exchange rack is the best way.

Thanks jonigel so there is rubber in the ball socket end (left hand side of pic below) that wears out?

No not in the ball and socket thats a sealed unit, which wears ,this is all inside the rubber gaiter, when you remove the gaiter this is what you will see. The left hand end is threaded to screw into the rack with the two lockwashers.

Thanks jonigel that makes sense, I think it must be these bits that are worn out and I will look to replace.
