Please help identifying cables and connectors

We're trying to mate an '87 GTL bodyshell to a '78 GTL motor ... both LHD.

and could use some help in identifying cables and connectors - too much time has passed since seperating bodies and original chassis, and I must confess my photos and cable tags are less than optimal.

First pic - the blue cable with the female "banana" type plug"

Second pic - green and grey cable with the black dual connector

Third pic - grey and green cables, black cables, red and yellow cables in a black dual connector

Fourth pic - green cable with black connector, black and pink cable with black dual connector

Thanks

Robert

Two down ...

Checked at the "spare parts" car ...

The grey/green cable (2nd pic original post) is for the switch for the reversing lights (my 78GTL has none, and there's a switch with only one connector in the gear box).

The green cable (4th pic original post) is for the oil pressure switch.

We'll swap over the alternator from the newer car as the older one has a seperate alternator and regulator ... that should sort out more cabling woes.

I'm still interested in your opinions though :)

Robert

Excuse me gentlemen, i'll do this in german.

Thanks, elch101 ... I'll translate your answer nonetheless, as a lot of people (including myself) use the forum as a sort of online encyclopedia.

"The blue cable in the first pic could well be unconnected. The GTL often has some cables that were not used when factory new which can be misleading.
All the cables from the third pic go to the new style alternator with integrated regulator. Three cables (one from battery + ) to the big screw terminal which is afterwards protected by a cover, and two or three with smaller terminals to the earth terminal.

The double connector in the fourth pic is a puzzle - is the connection to the ventilator and thermostat at the radiator done properly? If so, there could be a diagnostics connector"

Well ... we're looking for the new style alternator ... it's gone missing since we've removed it ... and I've also brought the radiator fan from the red car, so more connections should sort themselves out (the radiator itself was bent in the accident of the red GTL, cf my "mongrel renovation" thread).

The black and pink one is still a puzzler, though ... there's nothing on the spare parts car that could connect to it, and the cables have some sort of connection to the heating ventilator on the inside of the car.

Hi Robert,

I checked on my 1985 F6 ...

The blue connector in the first pic is unused.
The connector in the second pic is the reverse light switch.
Elch is of course right all the cables in the 3rd pic belonging to the alternator.
The connector in the last pic is as well unused.

Attached a pic of my alternator, you can see the unused connector on the lower left side zip-tied to the wiring loom and (hopefully) all the cables attached to the alternator.

Cheers,

David

P.S.
Why not ask on the German board?

Thanks, David, that pic is very helpful.

I joined Clementine's when the German board was going through a phase of ... reorganisation, and people here have been most knowledgeable and helpful - so this has become my primary haunt.

Robert

I fully understand that. ;)
I prefer it over here as well, even with the language barrier.
Unlike this forum, the German message board is full of - hmm how to put it in a gentle way - strange and cocky people mostly with a know-it-better attitude.
One of my "favourites" is the old guy who's driving a 1982 VW Passat and answers nearly every question with his weak R4 "knowledge" from the past century or so.
And always his boring and out of place VW Passat stories ... :?

Cheers,

David

If I may use the topic for one more "mistery" cable. It's a red near spark plug on the left. Is a similar to blue one on #1 pic in the first post, determined as unused.
Thanks for help.

I have the blue cable from Bertl's first photo and the red cable from Allez-y's photos, both are unconnected. I've never worked out where the other ends go to!

Just to add on post #1 and #8 -

#1 First pic - "the blue cable with the female 'banana' type plug"'
#8 "It's a red near spark plug on the left."

These cables have in my 1985-GTL the indicator / blinker signal. I would suppose this was used in some country versions like for Italy or Denmark where additional indicator lights were mounted on the front wings.

I spotted this one in Italy - nice rhombus shaped lights.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Carsten! Don't know why I didn't work this out before - now thant you point it out, I see those connectors are plainly marked on the circuit diagram.

Hello Everybody,
I would like to use this topic to get some help according to wiring. I am also having problem to find and identify some cables, so it is getting me a little bit confused. For this reason is there anybody who could provide me with some wiring diagrams. My R4 is from 1978.

Thanks ahead,
Szabti
