hi, i was wondering if anyone can help me, i have a n reg automatic megane, whenever i slow down to stop at a junction the engine idles REALLY unsteady and then cuts out.It also hardly ever starts first time, i have had the spark plugs and h.t leads changed, now it has got worse, i really don't know what the problem is and im too afraid to drive anywhere! please can someone help! thanks.

have you checked the engine earth strap.
the negative battery conection to the bodyshell.
somtimes silly as it seems the petrol cap on older cars can be the cause of a simular problem.if you car does not start every time remove the petrol cap,if you hear a sort of hiss then it means the little breather hole in the cap is blocked.i had a modern escort and each morning it would not start until i removed the petrol cap and letsome air into the tank then it was fine until the nxt day!!
Hope this has been some help

I wouldn't have thought of the petrol tank - good call there daisy. Might also be a faulty idle control unit, or one of a variety of sensors. Well worth taking it into a garage with diagnostic equipment and getting them to read the fault codes.

petrol cap

you would be suprised the amount of cars i have bought over the years from people who thought they were riping me off and all due to a small hole that was blocked in the petrol cap!!
Another simlar but overlooked fault is with the stromberge carb, you know the ones that are fitted to cars like volvos and metros if the oil in the pot is empty the float pin sticks and acts like the engine has run out of petrol:wink:

Strange you should say that Daisy, cos that was hapening in my Land Rover 101, and then my mechanic/friend told me to put some oil in the dashpots, which I have done regularly ever since. And it hasnt done it since, funnily....
