Good evening everybody :)

I was just wondering; What are the price levels in your respective contries. For a R4 of course.

Here in Denmark the worn out, but driveable examples are from 700 to 1400 £, everyday runners/'weekend fund rides' in good nick is around 2400 to 3500, and the top-resto's are 4000 and upwards.

Present example: http://www.veteranposten.dk/visAnn.asp?Id=160790

My own which was a weekend runner with complete service history from France until 97000km, where it was imported to DK. It got several undercoatings and nothing but surface rust = 2450 £

That's a very interesting question. I think prices are on the way up here in the U.K. especially with the huge following of all things vintage

I should add an elementary question: "Are there any R4s for sale in your country?" !

Here in Greece I can recall of less than ten R4s for sale over the last five years. And the R4 was very popular here-I have made an estimate of around 10.000 cars registered. It seems that the market has settled down. Few R4s survive nowadays, in the hands of people who love them and are not interested in selling, but rather in buying one more R4!

In Croatia you can buy R4 from 200€ to 2000€.

Up to 200€ are cars for parts.

For 200€ you will get mechanicly alright car but with rusted and poor body. Maybe you can pass MOT and drive it but not likely.

For 1000€ you will get road leagal and worthy daily driver. Without need to do anything major on car.

200 to 1000 is mainly pricelist for R4 on Croatian market. And there are plenty of them. 55 at this moment offered for sale

2000€ and up you must give for low milage, maintained, first owner, garaged car from early years of production. TL models.

But realy rear you can find that kind of car on free market.

Here we only have an original (read: USED to the bone) danish post R4 van at 2999 pounds, and some semi scrap ones at 500-800. One tried to sell his over-renovated GTL last autumn for 8200 pounds (!!) ...When he dropped the price to 4500 he managed to get it sold ;) - In the early 90'ies nearly every postcar here was a R4, but knowing how post-officials drive, 99 % are dead now. Luckily spares are plentiful and damn cheap, even here :)

Seems that Croatia could use a visit Petak :)

Due to the popularity of the 4L Trophy taking 1500 cars a year the price of the GTLs is rising substantially. This months Gazoline magazine has them going up by 16% per year which is probably the highest increase I have seen in classic cars in this publication.

Here in the UK prices are going up too.
Very little can be bought for sub £1000 and most of these will require extensive work.I have not seen a good usable right hand drive car for less than £2500 for a long time. A well sorted car is going to cost £4000 to 6000 but body off restoration cost unless you can do everything youself will be even higher.
The problem at present is that the rising prices are tempting some to restore cars with filler a nice paint job and try to turn a quick profit.
In the workshop this year we have seen wings held on with silicone rear bushes welded to the back leg to hold the leg on thus loosing adjustment and some very dangerous mechanical repairs.
Left hand drive cars are are being brought in from France and Spain but are less popular with many enthusiasts and can be bought more cheaply.
My advice when buying a car would be a very close examination of the chassis and body and if you do not know the 4 well take a friend who does or consult one of the three or four specialist that repair 4s on a regular basis.
Remember you cannot always get back restoration costs in the short term but a well sorted car will give good service for many years to come.

Very true - I have put about €4K into my little car and there is no way I would get 5 to 6 for it at the moment so I will keep it and drive it and enjoy it which was the reason why I put so much work into it.

Yes, agreed, LHD doesn't suit everyone. But a nice clean and reliable left-hooker that's solid from the tyres up will always be an asset. I brought this little darling from Department 16 last week. OK, so it's had paint at some time, but it's solid as a rock. My other half doesn't care if it's original or not. She just wants to go posing in her Easter bonnet on Monday in the Quatre'elle. And the little darling is for sale, not the wife, the car................. ON SECOND THOUGHTS, IF YOU BUY THE CAR, I'LL THROW THE WIFE IN THE DEAL.......SN858030.JPG

Next, can anyone enlighten me regarding a fog lamp for the 1981 R4TL when I show-up for first UK M.O.T. There isn't one fitted at present. I am familiar with the regs: Driver's side if only one foglamp. LHD vehicles foglamp to be behind passenger for UK use. So one each side - equidistant from the centre line keeps everyone happy, except the environmentalists and their carbon fingerprint. It's one in the centre for them!!
But what year did rear foglamps become "obligatory" under the vehicle lighting act??

Nice one Apprentice :) I really like the colour. Ive just found out that mine has the original french plates underneath the danish ones :) So now I can get speeding fines without a care :D ... If the car could run that fast....

After its 50 years celebration in 2011, and the associated hype from Renault and motoring websites, prices were almost expected to go higher. It would be interesting to see how they will be affected by the availability of the new chassis.

Hi Apprentice. I solved any problems by having one each side with my LHD van. Also did same with reversing lights. My personal preference though.

Slightly off topic but relevant to buying lhd car for UK use

Thanks everyone,
so it was 01/04/1980. Typical of me to invest in a 1981 vehicle. I've had my suspicions that the Construction & Use Act has had it in for me for some time. Never mind, good day for me - so far, in so much as I haven't broken anything! Let's get that fog lamp fitted next starting with a nice fat line fuse at power source.............. dipped headlamp cable UK off-side
Dave

Hi Dave, have a look under the back bumper where the fuel gauge wire goes into the chassis. There may be a wire already fitted for a fog lamp, connected to a switch on the dashboard. Can't remember which year that started being put in.
