Problem with alloy wheels catching...

Hello 4-istes.
I fitted a set of BBS alloy wheels (that I bought many years ago), to my 1984 R4 GTL. I had new 155/80 x 13 tyres fitted. The wheels fitted well, there was plenty of clearance around the wheels and nothing was even close to creating a problem.

However, when my wife and I went out in the car this morning, there was a horrendous noise of something scraping when we went round left or right hand bends. I stopped several times but could see nothing touching. We drove home carefully.

When I took the rear wheels off there was no evidence on the wheels, bodywork (wheelarches) or suspension of anything untoward. I have taken the wheels off and replaced the original steels.

As so many people fit alloys to Renault 4's, has anyone else experienced this problem? Do I need new rear shockers?

Check that the tyres do not rub against rear wing inner edges, it can be possible when different offset wheels are fitted.

If the noise comes on only on left turns, it can also be the right rear tyre inner side rubbing on the fuel tank breather hose, if the latter is not securely clipped.

Are you shure the problem is rear? Rear should be lots of space.
Front the 155 tires may touch the fenders in bends or there might be not enough clearance betwenn the BBS and the brake. Girling Callipers usually don't fit with BBS.

It's normally just the tops of the wings rubbingagainst the tyre, I had to roll my arches slightly to stop mine rubbing.

I'd guess its more to do with the offset of the BBS wheels than anything else. My GTL had 175/80/13s on (IIRC) and only occasionally rubbed on the back if their was much weight in it.

F6 wears 165/65/13 with no rubbing at all.
