Problem with Carburettor?

I have a great little R4 and the only problem I have ever had with it is when I run out of petrol which I did last week! It seems to have sucked some dirt up and now either wont start or if it does it will only run for a few minutes and then cut out again. When I try to start it it will only start on tick over and as soon as I put my foot on the accelerator then it cuts out immediately. I have changed the fuel filter, checked the petrol in the float chamber, removed the jet but still haven't been able to solve the problem. Any ideas on what else I can do? Any help would be much appreciated as it has just passed an MOT and we were hoping to sell it asap before our baby arrives!

Many thanks,
Renny

It does sound like a blocked carburettor jet. If the idle jet was working but the main jet blocked it would die on throttle. Best way to fix it would be remove the carb, clean any dirt from the float chamber, then blow all the jets and tubes out with an air line.

Hi Renny,

Are you sure you are getting a constant flow of petrol throught the pump ?

I once had a very similar problem and it turned out there was an airlock in the pipe after I had completely run out of petrol. The car would idle for a short while and then cut out once I put my foot down. I ended up having to blow really hard down the breather pipe to push petrol down the main pipe and clear the airlock !

Just a thought in case it's not a blocked jet. Incedentally was the old fuel filter full of dirt or the float bowl when you dismantled it ?
