I have just discovered that the front brakes are binding and I am wondering if the correct brake cylinders and shoes have been put on, as I have been told there are different sizes.

Does any member know the correct size of both for my 1971 R4 estate I believe it is the R1123.
I measured the drum size and it is 200mm in diameter

There is only one brake shoe type for 200 mm drums.

Wheel cylinder diameter is 15/16" (23,8mm). What you will probably find different is the wheel cylinder length, originally 60mm then 66mm and finally 72mm. Ignore this as all types are 100% interchangeable.

Have you checked the handbrake cables if they have seized? If the handbrake is adjusted too tightly, the front brakes may bind when you reach steering lock. Also make sure the brake hoses are in good condition.

Thanks Angel,
I will check it out tomorrow, I don't suppose you know the actual size of the nut that retains the front drive shaft, as the one I took off was cross threaded and was a modern type of locking nut, rather than the older type of nut.
I would have thought that the older type of thread and nut to be the BSF or British standard Whitworth .
I don't really know when the French motor car industry converted to metric.

M16x150 if my memory is not cross-threaded...will check later today.

French never "converted to metric". They invented metric system a long time ago as an alternative to Imperial!
