Hello,

I recently bought a Renault 4 gtl. When I fill the tank with more than 10 liters of fuel, the cabin starts to smell very strongly of gasoline. Both when driving and when stationary. After I have driven for a while and there is less fuel in the tank, the smell also decreases. Maybe you know the reason for the problem? Please share your experience

I've had a similar problem with a Renault; the problem was the seal on the top of the tank, where the sender unit was fitted. This had perished, allowing the fuel to soak through onto the top of the tank, particularly when full. Changing the gasket and carefully tightening everything solved the problem and the smell slowly diminished. Fortunately neither my family nor myself smoke......

Thank you for answer. How did you get to that seal ? Did you took off gas tank or is there some easier way ?

I started to investigate and found this. You had your problem here ?
Looks like Someone already had problem here and have cutted the floor...

I lowered the tank from under the car, but, having read your most recent post it seems someone's cut through the floor of the boot to access the sender unit, so you won't have to! Yes, this is where the problem was with the car I fixed. I bought a new sender unit from V.D.O.

Thanks for your help. Seems that sender unit is working fine. I will try to change just gasket and see will it help.

Looking at the photos with that hole in the trunk floor above the tank, wouldn't it be helpful to cut out a rectangular area with gasket and fit a lid with hinge and recessed lock? ;)

Was thinking the same.. a picture with a couple of dimensions on showing the centre of the Fuel sender location might be useful for somebody on here in the future :)
