R4L Oil Pressure light?

the big 7

Hi,
Can anyone give me some tips on the red warning light on the left of the dash cluster?
I thought it was the oil pressure light but I could be wrong?

The light comes on at idle but goes out as soon as you rev the car gently, is this normal?
I have checked and changed the oil pressure switch but it makes no difference.
The car runs beautifully so no problems that I am aware of.

thanks in advance.

Hi Big 7, check out the fan belt that drives your alternator. It might be worn or need tightening.
I think that's the warning light that you see.

Looks old ! Probably got a generator, regulator box might not be kicking in at idle.

I know mine doesn't which was a pain in the winter when I was stuck in a traffic queue with the heater on only to stall it and find a flat battery !

Regulator

Hi,

Yes it's old and has the regulator fitted.
Anyway I can check the regulator box you mentioned?
Or can I just by a new one cheap enough?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that your fanbelt on the generator has worn. Try and tighten it a little; it should have an adjuster. See if that works first before you buy anything.

My VW Beetle had exactly the same problem

It's not a problem, it's quite normal for dynamo equipped cars, like yours, not to be charging on idle. The light should go off at around 1000 rpm, and if you listen carefully you will hear a click from the bulkhead area, as the voltage regulator cuts in.

Check, however, with a voltmeter, that you have around 6,5-7 volts (your R4 should be 6V) at the battery terminals with engine running at around 2000 rpm ,and not much lower when the headlights are swithched on.

The drivers manuals detail the light is intended to come on on ignition, and then once turning over goes off, so everything good and no problem at all. If it comes on when you have some revs up then time to start checking for culprits.
