R4's Banned from Paris in 2 Years

France is a big country (4 times the size of the UK with the same population) with plenty of nice roads and plenty of ordinary citizens who are quite happy with using "old" cars. Although I have taken a LHD R4 round Piccadilly Circus I don't think I'd have the nerve to try it on the Périphérique, same with my 17-year-old P405.

This is simply a cynical ploy by a French Socialist to woo the car manufacturers while simultaneously looking "green". Ignore it.

Anyway, the way the Eurozone is going at present, soon people in France won't be able to afford new cars anyway. Buy up the Quatrelles while we can for later resale!!

what about the little old ladies who have had a 2cv for 40 years and its all they know how to drive and live along the Avenue Victor Hugo?

are they going to be forced to scrap it and buy a new car or give up driving?

Well, if they are driving 2CVs, they probably need to be sectioned, which means they'd be banned from driving anyway. Res ipsa loquitur . . . .

I hope this doesn't succeed as it sounds incredibly stupid.

I wonder how the law could support the banning of cars on the basis of their age. The 17 or 18 year limit is completely arbitrary as far I can see.

What if, for example, you have a Renault 4 that has been converted to use electricity?

The motor industry always seem to be lobbying for these nonsensical incentives to buy newer cars.

Make no mistake, it's not just some French politicians that are against older cars, I'm sure it's quite common across Europe, and our lot are no better. This could well be the "thin end of the wedge" and sadly the days of owning and enjoying old cars could be numbered. It's now time for the members of our hobby to start thinking about the future of our motoring heritage, and the pastime we all enjoy. Or have I got this wrong and we have nothing to worry about, I hope so. Any thoughts folks.

A lot of this is down to eu objectives, they like London will be getting huge fines if they don't get the air pollution down.

Diesels are by far the worst polluting though.

The thing is I wonder what the percentage is of old cars compared to the total number of cars in general in say a city like Paris, pretty small I would think, and as you point out pepper, diesel vehicles are the worst polluters surely, aren't they? Diesel engines need to be driven hard to keep them clean, so spending their time in traffic jams in Paris or any big city is not good, so surely it's these vehicles the politicians should be targeting.

Somewhere I read it said only 3% of cars were over the 18 year limit so if that is true its an absolute waste of time and money.

Also how does it fair if and Englishman drives his English 4 through Paris?

Hmm 3% eh Mike, so what is the point, a complete waste of time and money. I'm not sure I would like to drive through Paris but some thing tells me I should give it a try in Marigold while I've still got the chance. Don't think I would be given priority though Tom.:D

La Périphérique...

We took our little Amelie (1984 GTL) from Tunbridge Wells to Monflanquin via Paris last June - the first time my lovely lady had driven in France - and she experienced the joy of the Périphérique in heavy rain! We haven't driven that way since:eek:

Hello there, that doesn't sound like a good experience, but I still fancy a drive in the city, I mean, how scarey can it be? Last year a group of Dutch R4 enthusiasts drove through Paris and got some great photos.

I'm up for it if you boys are, next summer, sometime in July perhaps, isn't there something 4L ish on in France about then.:D

Yes sounds fun

Spoke to a lovely young French lady about this. She reckons it will never happen because she thinks the French will complain a lot about it and ignore any legislation. Better to have an old knackered car in Paris because cars get dented a lot in parking.
