R5GTL into R4F4,some (more)questions...

Hi all!Finally have managed to get the R5engine/box home.
washed and cleaned it out and found it to be engine-type: 810 G - 726 (1289cc) my book says 44Bhp(?)
8,5:1 comp. Carb:Solex 32 SEIA or is that SE1A..
-Why oh why couldn't it have been the 64Bhp??:(:wink:

-What does it take to get some more hp out of this one? Headers?less restrictive exhaust? other carb? Nitro? c",)
potato-Chip tuning??

gearbox :
354 -136 4speed(floor-shift)
but should be only matter of changing top-lid to get Proper shift right?

-Will the crossmember from a 4L fit Roffen the F4 (LHD)(2106)-or should I rather have a 'proper'strut-brace made up? it's mostly for supporting the gear-lever...

Have all motor/gbox mountings ,did I hear something about mountings on FRAMEside had different angle ??
also have driveaxles and compl.front-hubs w.discs/calipers (just in case I need to change for discs later on)
-will give it a try as is first
as more or less given up locating mech.calipers from older Suzuki 50cc to use as handbrake on discs.. (I have one but need one more Hint-hint...)


WANTLIST: Reardoor L or R-hinged to fit R4F48 fourgon.
Prefer complete with window and as rust and dentfree as poss..... -R.
 
well reading my official renault book dated may 1981 says the engine you have is from a R1225 R5 with 9.5 cr
cam timing is given as 22, 62 , 65, 25, but no bhp figures listed

very early 5gtls had the carb with a screw to stop butterfly opening fully (check malcolms thread from a while back) also early 5gtl 1289s had short reach spark plugs later (1980? )had long reach never used on 4s so check before fitting new ones
5speed 5gtls 1982 were 1108 cc short reach so plenty of wrong plugs fitted by some people in the past !!!
354 136 box is 10/31 and same ratio as most 1108 r4s

my earlier comment about chassis mounts were made forgetting you already had 1108 in f4 van
in UK we only got 845 f4 vans s so was a problem for us here only
hubs may have diferent tapers on track rod end if r5 had seperate bolt on track rod arms and eye bush type rack but otherwise bolt on ,as well as shaft which are same as 4

My F4 is also 845 as it is original French spec'd car...( code 100
while R5 has Norwegian specs (code 146
so what problems would I be up against here? The wreckers were
in such a hurry so rest of R5 is now made into a brand new M'Bitch I guess..
Are the chassis-mounts just heftier or different angle (-or both) to the F4/845cc ones?
Plugs are 13mm.tread-depth which I am pretty sure is correct ones.
As it was the used with these until the lady rammed a 125cc.so parked the car for rep.Then some idiots thought it would be nice to flip the car over on it's roof and kick out all windows etc.
-so it was written off.

-Will have to check the details you mention on the carb...
On IN-side (facing in-towards the block) is a 'funny' movable arm of sorts..comes up from under the carb. Feels like it has a weak spring-load Arm/lever
Have no idea what this arm-lever is for ??? Will remove the carb
to have a look at where it comes from...It has kind of a Y-shape that fits onto a guide-tab at top of it..
WEY
couldn't ALL car-manuf.agree on using ONLY SU-carbs?
-would have made things simpler -but that might not be their goal I guess.

This R5gtl-engine has a serialnumber of 75277 -77mod(?) Don't know if this makes it a very early one or what..
-I'm feeling a bit like in the deep end of the pool with no bath-duck in sight..
so any/all good advice & hints greatly appreciated!! -R.
 
Hey I have a doubt! Does the renault 4 gtl gearbox work with a renault 5 gt engine? or with wich renault 5 engines does it work?

HI Doug! Both my R4F4 850cc And the R5Gtl 1289cc have the Same
gearbox (type 354 136) don't know what other R5's shares it.....

and does that r5gtl engine fit the r4 gtl? how many horsepower has it?

Well about the weather it's been colder and windyer last week, I'm in lisbon now and its about 13degrees here, last saturday I got 1 degree in Castelo Branco :O
 
my plan is to install the R5engine/box into my F4 (forgoneta) as
you can see I am still waiting for the Pros on here to tell me it's
going to be smooth sailing......
My info says the R1225 has 44Bhp but I wonder if it will be poss.to use the headers plus possibly carb off of a R12 to get some more??
-I believe this to be same 'family' of engineblock, (810)

For a while there I was worried sick that it was only up here in Norway we had this kind of cold weather..Nice weather outside

If you want more power on R4. Find R18 engine 1400ccm, and find box of old R5. Gearboh code is HA1. You need to some little work on engine, gearbox and chassis, but you will have vehicle with 65-72HP. :)
 
The thing is I don't want to change the place where you engage gears(gearknob) to the ground. Without doing this wich solutions do I have?
 
As i sad.

Find HA1 gearbox of Renault 5, old version. It is 11 cm longer that gearbox of R4 gearbox HA0. There is instruction to change HA1 gearbox from "ground" to "normal" R4 gearbox.

Also you need to cut chassis part where mount gearbox bolts and make it ~11cm outer of standard chassis. Because HA1 gearbox is about 11cm longer that HA0.

Next, find R18 engine. Old version of 1400ccm. You need to put camshaft from R4 into R18 engine. It is necesery, because on R18 camshaft have wrong side for pulley for belt. Also put bonnet for chain from R4 to R18 engine. It necesery. When you change cmshaft, you will have free hole on bonnet for chain.

Thats it.

have typed this out several times now :) if ihad more time would relink to relevant threads
all 845 and smaller cc run opposite direction to 956cc and larger cc
if you try and mix you will end up with too many reverse gears and only one forward gear :shock:

regarding using 18tl 1397 engines not only is the cam different (which will easily change over) because the water pump is different end of cyl head the head casting is machined to allow water flow around the blanked off end

this also applys if you attempt to use any transverse engine in an r4

eassiest manifold to use will be 5ts /tx with twin weber on 5gtl engine
r12 exhaust exit is no use for r4
 
nemawa! seems you have it all sessed out here. Not sure how easy it would be to locate R18 engine up here.. Ages since I saw one last.
Think I will go with the R5engine I have here now,but Thanx much for all info-I'm sure it will be of use to others aswell..

Doug! The 354 box on Roffen the F4 has 'proper'gearshift The 354 box from the R5 has floorshift,but top-lids look exactly the same so should be poss to switch these to maintain indash-gear.
-seem to remember there was talk about changing one more bit in-side box (shift-fork??)-One is somewhat shorter than t'other. -R.
