I have a problem with my R6 850 cc gearbox.
The box is type 334 split case and the crownwheel and pinion has gone in both my gearbox and the spare I had.

Does anyone have a spare 334-04 or 06 box for sale or has anyone experience of fitting the later 354 box to the 850 engine
I think this box may well be shared with some 850 R4s.

This is the box where you push the lever forward for reverse back for first and then across the gate for second third and fourth gears.

Hello,

according to MR 145 you can use gearbox 334 No 04,05,06,07,12 and 13. No 06 and 07 do have a lowered gearlever, whatever this means, No 12 and 13 don't have the catch to start engine by hand.

I guess it's also possible to do a conversion to 354 which is of course a technical improvement. But maybe better to keep a rare car like yours original.

The 354 will fit to the engine without problems. I guess you need new type drive shafts too. Maybe you even have to change the stub axles. I'm not shure but I can find out.

Thank you I was lucky and a friend found another box for me today 334-10 the dif looks fine so I have taken it to the gearbox builder to have it checked out before fitting.
I agree I would like to keep the car original even though the later box is a nicer drive.

The "reverse" gearshift pattern and the whine of the straight-tooth first gear on these gearboxes beat the sturdiness and parts availability of the later "square" gearboxes anytime!

I actually greatly preferred the gearshift patten on the 334 gearbox. First to second was just push pause push, second to third straight back, fourth to third just pull pause pull, third to second push push - so simples! So easy, the gear changes you needed most were so logical, but that's just my view. Wish I had that on my '78 TL!
