Hi,

Is the Renault 6 engine, 688-A-7-10 exactly the same as a Renault 4 engine (eg like 688-C-7-11 fitted to F6 van or any other R4 688)?

It looks the same as I think from other posts that the R6 is same as R4 underneath the shell, but I need a second opinion.

Reason - I scrutineer at a grass track type event (in Gorges, Normandy) and basically I want all cars to be use engines from the Renault 4 range -Renault 5 engines definitely excluded.

But I've got a driver with a R6 engine above, and all the tech stats I can find seem to be the same between the two example above
eg 70mm * 72mm, ratio 8.3, capacity 1108cc - and R6's were produced during the life of the R4.

Thanks for all input

There were two models of the Renault 6.
They were slightly different in appearance, but it was all minor detail stuff. Headlight surrounds, bumper bars and some interior trim was the most of it.
There were ONLY two engines offered an 845 cc and the 1108cc units. There are some obvious differences. So if the car is original it should fit your rules without a murmur.

The blocks on all the Sierra / Cleon engines look pretty much the same. Do you measure the height of the head?

David,

Thanks for your reply.

Engine wise, my checks are fairly basic - basically I check engine numbers, and also carburettors.

1. I am relying on the drivers not to have changed the engine number plate as its only riveted on. My goal is to try to ensure nobody has fitted a Renault 5 engine (which I understand from this forum can be a straight swap)

2. When I started, quite a few had twin chokes fitted but I have now eliminated them.

But I've never measured the height of the head - tell me more as I'm intrigued.

The Cleon engine 688 - 1108cc has been fitted on the Renaut R4 & R6 with same components and settings.

The change to get different power is on carburator size, R4 -->28mm, R6 -->32mm.

Its more about the carburetors as Ughetto mentions (welcome to the forum by the way)

Make sure they are running 28mm and not 32mm Carbs!

As for blocks its too hard to check whether they've changed them due to it being so easy to swap plates.

I think the 5 engine has a higher lift cam shaft, Angel will probably know more though!

This is my current list of carburettors (including some 32's). By the time the vehicle gets to us - (they are past restoration so don't panic), they have had a hard life, and often built from several different donor cars - so they are permitted to use ANY bodyshell (except plein air etc), with ANY R4 (and now R6) engine, and ANY permitted carb.

I don't want to go off topic but here's a link to a gallery if anyone is interested
